Bummer - Run of 7 Returns - Americana

Post by johnnyrowing » Mon Jul 07, 2025 7:01 pm

It is my non-pleasure to report that I have a run of 7 consecutive returns for Americana related submissions. :(

This latest return stings a bit. I thought we might've nailed it. Gotta grieve here for a bit and then get back to crackin'. :)

Listing - Americana/Southern Rock - https://www.taxi.com/listings/S250705MA

Feedback - https://www.taxi.com/members/Ef77nz5GSm ... TurjoGxHEQ

Submission - Get Back to the Start - https://www.taxi.com/members/Ef77nz5GSm ... -the-start

Lyrics
Alright, maybe I should come back
And listen to the ones that speak my tongue
I might be mixed up with the mud from
My hometown and vibranium

Ooh . . . don’t tell me
Ooh, don’t break my heart
You can console me
And tell me I can get back
Get back to the start
Yea

And I, I got something too wild
To be chained or satisfied
Inside, I’m all flames and bonfires
This heat’s a gonna burn bright into the night

Ooh . . . don’t tell me
Ooh, don’t break my heart
You can console me
And tell me I can get back . . .
Get back to the start
Yea,
Yea, get back to the start

Ooh . . . don’t tell me
Ooh, don’t break my heart
You can console me
And refuse to break my heart

Ooh . . . don’t tell me
Ooh, don’t break my heart
You can console me
Yea, and get me back to the start

Yea, get me back to the start
Yea

Hey Johnny,

I feel for you. I've been on some bad streaks like that. Also been on some hot streaks too, so I know a hot streak is just around the corner for you.

I like the song. I agree with the screener on this "Nice twangy, Roots Rock tune. I like the reflective and heartfelt melody. I like the guitars too."

I don't have a great ear for mix and I'm listening on some bad tiny computer speakers right now, so I'll let others comment on that.

Hey Johnny - To my ear that constant kick-kick-snare beat starts to sound really mechanical, i would figure out a way to vary that. Also the lead guitars compete with the lead vocal for the starring role, I might experiment with dialing those back a bit.

Cool tune though, well done!

Hi Johnny,

Man, I dig your stuff. I remember we got forwarded on the same Americana brief a while back and loved that one, too.

Only two things that I might comment on (based on listening to lots and lots of Americana) are:

-Maybe the vocal's a bit dry?

-As the other person mentioned, there is a bit of competition among sounds. I've really been working on my panning to try and create room in the mix.

My two cents is not worth all that much, but I sure do like what you're doing. Keep up the great work.

It’s definitely a beautiful tune—just a few tweaks in the drums and mix will make a big difference.

Thanks for the feedback/comments Gary, WSAO, and eeeo.

I'll revisit the mix after some time passes and see what I can clean up. The listing mentioned something about "rough around the edges". So, I intentionally tried to avoid being too clean/polished. Great idea! Ha!

:)

Man, I really like this one. Sounds great to me. i often have trouble parsing what in the hell the screeners mean with their feedback myself.
It’s a little confusing when your screener says “band could be tighter” but then also says it’s “too stiff”. What do you do with that? :|
For this novice listener a couple things that did stand out to me a bit were that the drum part maybe didn’t sound like it was in the same room with the band if that makes sense. Maybe that’s what the screener meant by too stiff? The lead guitar lines were definitely a bit looser timing-wise than the drum part so maybe that’s what “could be tighter” meant.
The mix sounded a little more mid-rangy than the refs to my ears so maybe that’s what the EQ comment means.
Anyway, I have no idea what the hell i’m doing most of the time and i don’t know much about much but for what it's worth, i dug it.
Cheers,
carl
