Spiritual Songs
Hi Everyone!I was just thinking about songs that have a spiritual lyric or vibe to them, and thought it would be fun to hear some songs you guys have written on this lofty subject! Not necessarily religious, but it could be! Bhuddist, Christian, Deist, Humanist, Shamanist, Theist, you name it!Personally, I've been into the concept since early on, moving from John Coltrane to Yes to U2 to Hovhaness, and am always searching for music that explores the nature of human spirituality.I'LL START! This is a song I wrote and recorded with my rock group ROOM w/a VIEW awhile ago with me on guitar and vocals. The link:http://www.box.net/shared/dk7zzdkp02 Here's the lyrics: THEN THE RAINS CAME Spring came upon us slowly, tried to melt that sheet of whiteThen another blizzard hit us, blowing way into the nightAnd our crops were surely frozen, and our people feared the worst'Cause I guess we'd grown accustomed to the hunger and the thirst Then the rains came --- washed away our fearsThen the rains came --- after all these yearsWe had learned to see our lives through shades of doubtThen the rains came The trees began to blossom, but with summer soon to comeThe clouds weren't strong enough to veil the violence of the sunAnd some began to doubt if the Lord was on our sideAnd others started praying only when their faith had died Then the rains came --- washed away our fearsThen the rains came --- after all these yearsWe had learned to see our lives through shades of doubtThen the rains came We praised the colored autumn, just to feel the winter chillAnd the snow came down to greet us as the seasons always willThen the darkness was upon us, and our people searched for lightRaising eyes towards the heavens to release us from this night Then the rains came --- washed away our fearsThen the rains came --- after all these yearsWe had learned to see our lives through shades of doubtThen the rains came ***************************************************So, post a song or lyric if you like!Best Regards,Ern

Re: Spiritual Songs
Hi Ern,You've got some great vocals in that song-- reminded me a bit of Bon Jovi's vocals when you were singing full out. That's a neat idea.... spiritual songs. Most of my music (with the vocals at least) falls within the sacred chant music category, from a more eastern tradition. Here's three streaming samples to hear (most of our commercial release songs are 15-18 minutes in length , so I'm just posting short clips here...):http://www.raganiworld.com/music/Ragani ... p.m3uRaags

I'll check out your links when I get to my studio in a few hours. I've decided the headphone preamp in my laptop is pure crap (oops, not a spiritual word --- sorry! ).Ern

Re: Spiritual Songs
Hi Ern,You're most welcome! I see you are also on Broadjam, so I'll have to go have a listen after I wrap up with tonight's live gig. As for my tracks, they are streaming audio, so the quality is not likely as good to start with. Drop me a pm if you have feedback. I'm out of the studio these days (we're moving two offices), and I'll be headed back in to start crankin' again by the new year (hopefully!). Raags

Hey Raags!Really nice stuff! Wonderful vocals --- is that you singing? And what language are you singing in? I know singers like Jon Anderson (YES) made up his own language on recordings like "Olias Of Sunhillow" (fantastic record, BTW).I wonder if you've placed any of these masters with music libraries. They'd eat this stuff up! There's not too many people making authentic world music with your cool vibe, as far as I know.Great work!Ern

Couldn't download your link, Ern. Sorry. Would have liked to listen to your song, the lyrics are awesome! Here's my inspirational tune that I wrote, the one I always sing to myself when it seems that the road is just so filled with obstacles sometimes....it's my song about perseverence. It's called "When No One Else Believes." It comes in handy when I don't get fowards. I need to have it demoed....I have the melody as well, but I don't have an mp3 made of it yet. Here are the words:When No One Else BelievesVerse 1Everywhere around youSomeone's gonna doubt youAs you travel on that journey To points uknownIt's so easy to give upTo stay stuck in a hopeless rutBut if you stay the courseYou might make it homeChorusOh, you have to believeWhen no one else believesYou gotta have that visionWhen no one else can seeOh, you have to believeWhen no one else believesAnd you'll rise like the morning sunFloatin' over the treesVerse 2Those hard knocks they claim youAnd those critics they can tame youWhen those goals you're reaching forAre so far awaySome will call you crazyWhen you start dream chasin'Listen to your heartNot what others sayChorus:Oh, you have to believeWhen no one else believesYou gotta have that visionWhen no one else can seeOh, you have to believe When no one else believesAnd you'll rise like the morning sunFloatin' over the treesYes, you'll rise like the morning sunFloatin' over the trees

Thanks for posting that! --- Sorry you couldn't download my tune; I can stream it, and just tried the download button and it worked fine. Yea, a lot of us go through trials and tribulations in life --- really, EVERYBODY. I just got back from visiting my brother and sister in Michigan. Sis is doing fine, but bro is doing so badly he can barely get out of bed. It's really sad. His wife and I tried a gentle intervention, and he got quite angry. You can't help somebody if they don't want to help themselves, I guess.Anyway, carry on everyone!Ern

The language is Sanskrit (from India-- an ancient language of sound vibration that is no longer spoken, kind of like Latin). I've got several music library placements, though usually they are shortened versions of our 15-18 minute tracks. There is only library that wanted the entire tracks (smart!).It takes good work for me to produce these tracks, as they are all recorded track-by-track, live in my studio, with a full chorus. And I just learned all this techno stuff a few years ago. In the meantime, I'm working on some shorter instrumentals that can fill the gaps of my release dates (and hopefully fill the music libraries too!). I do realize what we do is very niche, and yet I also feel the present-day interest in sacred world traditions has helped us with our music. It's just a matter of time, I feel. I'm going to go check out Olias Of Sunhillow....Thanks again, ErnRaags

Quote:I'm going to go check out Olias Of Sunhillow....Cool! It's a great album. This was Jon Anderson's first solo album, and since he was a founding member of YES and playing with a fine but egomaniacal bass player, Chris Squier, "Olias" almost has NO bass on it. But that doesn't take away from the fantastic concept and performance by Anderson. As far as John McLaughlin, I first got into his jazz/rock fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra with the album "The Inner Mounting Flame," circa 1972. But before that he played with Miles Davis and then became a disciple of Sri Chinmoy. His recording "My Goals Beyond" (1970) is mostly acoustic, and VERY influenced by Indian music. They're both great albums, just very different. Check 'em out!Ern
