Best compliment ever

As far as the music of ONOFFON, we had a review a while back written by Jason Spatola on our CD release, Your Mind. He opened with this line -"ONOFFON, the progressive jazz-rock trio from California, has once again achieved perfection with their second release, Your Mind."...and he closed with this -"Your Mind is one of the greatest albums of all time by any artist. I sincerely recommend it to anyone."Pretty outrageous statement to make but I liked it! Ooh!! I love that song. I especially love how you surprised me when you off-beated the timing of the chorus, holding out Lord, dragging the first line. Surprised me. Hey Shaka - I think you're reading a little too much into this. Sometimes a compliment is just that - a compliment. It all depends on the context and situation, I suppose. Is this person going to gain in some way by saying your music's good? A compliment only needs to be backed up by a contract if that's what you were going in for in the first place...Otherwise, it's merely one person's opinion. And we all know what they say about opinions...

I'm curious about the title of this thread. Is a compliment from someone higher up the musical food chain more valid than any other? Is it the 'best'? What is a 'best' compliment? I don't really know about these things I'm sort of with OnOffOn here who rates the review of a young prog-jazz-rock lover as one of his best. The young guy's opinion was as valid as any.I've never had a 'honcho' rate my music to my face. I just know that my six year old son knows all the words to all of my songs, that every now and then the listings people that I subscribe to pass my tunes on, every now and then a library signs a track or two, that my friends may get a tear in their eye with one of my tracks every now and then and that I'm on a life long mission with this simple music of mine. No best or worst compliment from anyone matters to me per se, nor is going to derail me.Hell, even Dave Walton said one of my tracks was passable. Well, semi passable Liam

I'm with you on the kids thing, Liam. When your kids think your music is cool......it's cool. They're hard to please after a certain age and can truly be harsh critics, especially when they go through the rebellious teen years. They keep me on my toes.

I don't really know about these things Liam, I totally get your point and I agree an industry opinion doesn't matter more than anyone else's. The reason I consider it one of the best compliments is that for me winning a Grammy has always been a symbol of attaining the highest peak in the industry. It certainly isn't necessary for me to consider myself successful, happy or fulfilled. But it's like a football player at the Superbowl, an athlete at the Olympics or a horse at the Triple Crown, it's a symbol of attainment. So to have one of the top people at the Grammy's give me that acknowledgement is the closest I've ever come to that dream. That's why it felt like one of the best compliments. But I really agree with you that it doesn't automatically count as more important than the opinion of someone else.NomiPs- Congrats on being a Taxi featured artist recently.
