What's your day job?

For those of us still slaving away for Da Man instead of making a living from music, let's commiserate.I actually really like my job, though it hardly pays anything at all. I'm the editor of Coast Weekend (www.coastweekend.com), a weekly arts and entertainment magazine that covers the North Oregon and Southwest Washington coastal areas. It's published by our local newspaper, The Daily Astorian (www.dailyastorian.com).It's great because I love working in a newsroom amid smart people; I get to ignore all the "hard news" and controversial issues and focus on the fun stuff; and except for one assistant who plugs everything into the Web, it's all at my own pace. I can even leave early when I need to pick up the kids from school, come in late at night if I need to catch up - as long as I get the work done by deadline, I'm good.That's the real paycheck, the flexibility. We have so much stuff going on in our lives that I'd never be able to hold down a 9-to-5 job and still do everything we do. It does kill me, though, that my husband brings home three times as much as I do! (Granted, he works his butt off!)So, what's everyone else spending their time doing when they're not creating fabulous music?Kathleen

I went where most of the artistically inclined end up working---the food industry. Now I'm a restaurant manager. Sometimes I get this pensive expression on my face and people think I'm getting mad about something.But I'm really just thinking up lyrics.

Wow, Kathleen, cool job!! (how come the cool ones never pay as much as the less-than-cool ones?) I'm draggin my way through my junior year at USM as a community health major, then on to a dual master's program at Tulane in New Orleans for both social work (counseling) and community health. I volunteer as a counselor for women with breast cancer and hospice patients but that's gonna hafta slow down as my class schedule heats up (I'm so over school, gak!).Maybe I'll jes stick with one masters. The rest of the time is the kids, hubby and doing some Hurricane Katrina outreach stuff. Oh, and the kagillions of pets. Anyone want a Katrina kitty? I got some! If I could catch the two females, I'd be good to go! Hubby's got a cool gov't job as a wildlife biologist. We're actually going bear trapping next week to radio tag one that wandered on the refuge. That's not something you get to do every day so I'm riding on his coattails on that one. Turnabout is fair play, he used to play harmonica at my gigs. Cashin' in now! Cha-ching!

I'm an artist But I pay the bills by being the network manager for a state government. I can't say it's something I love doing. Actually, I can't say it's something I like doing. But I'm good at it and it pays the bills.I guess I'm with some of the other people here who talk about seeing their own mortality. I know that whatever I do here won't matter in 10 years.. much less after I'm gone.But.. it's a job.

I work for a title insurance company (one of the stealth real estate industries) doing title searches (real estate records). I won't bore you with the details if you don't know what title insurance is. It's a nice steady income (pretty good one), but definitely not very exciting. I enjoy what I do sometimes, and I work for a good company that treats me well, but just wish I didn't have to do it full time.

Repair job-shop machinist. I can fix anything but the crack of dawn or a broken heart. Tough on the old bod, though. Especially the hands.

Software Engineer... I do both software for microprocessor circuit boards and also for PC applications.... For you software nerds out there, I write the microprocessor stuff in embedded "C" and the PC stuff in Visual Basic... Casey

After VOWING on sacred ground --7 years ago, while living in San Francisco-- that I would never, EVER, under ANY circumstances step behind a bar again or wait on another table, I'm bartending and waiting tables again. Hey, I never imagined 7 years ago I'd be living in Taos again. And I'll do whatever I have to do in order to remain here for a while longer.Life is good. Or at least comical.Ted
