I'm a bookkeeper at a law firm. I just recently got my boss to switch me to a 4-day week, so that I have at least one full day for songwriting and music business. Dave

Wow... this is all very interesting! Such a wide range of work we all do. I'm one of the very few lucky ones that does 'this' full-time. I got a music degree in school, and never looked back. My first job was "tape dub boy" in the backroom of jingle company, and worked my way up in a couple years to writing and producing commercials. Then I moved to LA to try my hand at big time pop music, and like many got "thiiiiis close" to making it REALLY big, but the artist that we were counting on got shelved at the last second by the major label. Dang. Since then I've been scraping together some cool gigs and some not so cool gigs, but managing to scrape by. I live in Northern California in a beautiful area of the state, an hour from Lake Tahoe, a couple hours from the Bay Area, on an acre and a half of land (we have chickens for fresh eggs!!) and a new "dream studio" (it's not THAT fancy) to work in everyday... it has nice big windows that look out to the trees. I may not know how I'm going to pay the mortgage next month (something I've gotten used to over the last decade of doing this), but everything else is amazing. Keep at it folks... it CAN be done. -brian

I am the East Coast Regional Business Development manager for the largest US Fire Safety Equipment distributor. I cover everything east of the Mississippi River- Travel a whole lot-- write and compose on the weekends- ( thank god for " Finale" I write a lot of arrangements on planes via the computer ) When I'm " in town" I do a lot of volunteering ( at the High school Jazz band level). I work for a great company that pays very well... would still prefer to write and record full time.See you at the rally.Bob

I still play music live, although there are more valleys than peaks these days. But I may be going to gig in Copenhagen and Sweden and Finland soon. I also do some mixing and mastering at home with Cubase and Wavelab for people, but this is more of a word of mouth thing with musician friends. Along with that I do CD duplicating and inkjet CD printing, and that is usually small orders for people who want to sell their CDs off the stage. So I can give them a bit of a package. But the axe came down on live music in Toronto when the smoking ban took full effect so on the valley days I do night shift security work at trade shows, and I bring along my Boss Micro for those long 12 hour shifts and work on lyrics from tracks that I've transferred from the computer, or I work on ideas right from scratch and take them home and upload them. I've completed a few songs that way.

I provide equipment needed for utilities and contractors to install powerlines both overhead and underground. We manufacture, sell and rent this stuff across the US and Canada. My days are spent making sure customers have the right equipment for their job. Linemen are pretty laid back folks unless they're in a bind.

I babysit the house. You know. Make sure the couch doesn't walk away, keep the computer warm and take on the heavier labor of opening the mail .I am working on getting an on-line business started. That's teaching me patience. So, guess I'm a student, too.

I am a freelance Avid and Final Cut Pro editor. I've edited shows that have aired on ABC, VH-1, ESPN, SPEED, Discovery etc. I'm currently cutting my third independent feature, and have done countless commercials and corporate video.Its' quite possible that I've even used some of your music as there are several music libraries that I've used music from in the span of my career. It works very well for me to be freelance because I can pick and choose the projects that pay the bills, and have the time, freedom and flexability to write, record, and perform my music in the continuing quest to shift the balance from editing income to music income.
