Re: Avril's "Girlfriend" is a Ripoff of...
Yeah, they are strikingly similar. But somehow I don't think *she*, being the age that she is, had anything to do with it. What's more likely is "Dr. Luke", the other person credited, wrote that part - he was born in 1973 and he is more of a career songwriter/producer than Avril is. I also have a suspicion that Avril herself may not have had anything to do with the songwriting at all, but may have bargained for some of the credit as part of her agreement.

The rip-off that bothers me the most is Josh Groban... "You Raise Me Up".Ok, listen to the first line of the chorus... as it ascends, it's copying "Oh Danny Boy", and when it descends from there, it's copying "Wind Beneath My Wings". It's a double rip!

The writer's off You Raise Me Up have acknowledged their nod in the direction of Danny Boy and of course the Londonderry Air was already in the public domain.

Quote:"I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by the RubinoosI thought so! Maybe she thought 1979 is too long ago for anyone to remember...listen to the chorus.here ya go:http://www.rubinoos.com/boyfriend.mp3or ... ubinoosNot to mention the Hey (Hey) You (You) - Rolling Stones Get off of My Cloud ?I thought I had heard it b4. Avril ripped them off totally. Well, fellow TAXI jury....is she guilty as charged????if that is a plagiat or not would need to be judged by music expertises.my opinion: no, it isn't - you can't copyprotect a line like "hey (hey) you (you)" itself. I think the harmonies of the two songs are diffrent, so is the melody after the hey-you. it sounds likewise, though - but I doubt that it's enough to be a plagiat.cheers, martin

Hey everyone I'm new here! Hello. I can understand what you mean when you say that you can hear certain portions of other artists work in certain songs, yet I think that most times, (at least I find so anyways) it's very hard to write a song in which the melodies do not match or borrow from someone else. Please don't think that I'm saying it all right for this to happen, yet I just feel that so many artists create melodies and they end-up being similar to another peice of work. Now, the difference is, when that artist's work sounds more than just familiar; when it actually copies another work, that's of course plagerism. ORIGINALExamples; George Harrisons' "Oh My Lord," = "He's So Fine," "Ghost Busters"= "I wanna New Drug" Although to is hard to come up with a melody that sounds totally original.

Very BOLD of you to say so.The legal definition of plagiarism is like an elastic band. We all borrow note sequences from various songs. Whether we are aware of it or not. It's because there are so many songs out there now. I remember reading an article nearly 20 years ago that said that by 2020, it will no longer be possible to write an original composition. There are lots of original chord and note sequences that still haven't been used. Only problem is that most of them hurt my ears. BTW. Do you mean "My sweet lord" by George Harrison?

Maybe then it only serves them right they got "ripped off" by Avril. It's true the hook of Avril's song is similar (but only similar, NOT the same), and so is the overall concept of the song. Personally, overall I don't think the song is nearly close enough to be called plagiarism. And I think it's more likely to be a coincidence, or perhaps a subconcious influence...not likely at all that it was done on purpose.matto

Re: Avril's "Girlfriend" is a Ripoff of...
Whenever I write a melody (that I think is worth something), I'll always run it by several people to see if it reminds them of anything specific. And that's just once it gets past my own internal "plagia-meter". I think that if a group of reasonably aware person cannot place it or are not reminded of anything, then it's ok to proceed. In the case of this Avril song, or "You Raise Me Up", alarm bells would go off immediately as it being too close. You also have to take into account chord sequences which would of course change the melody's context. In the "My Sweet Lord" case, I remember reading that this was a factor.Of course, I'm not sure how closely my definition matches up with the legal definition, but blatant copying is definitely something I try to avoid. There are still lots of combinations out there! (I hope). Dave
