Panora.com - Cool site for targeting listings

Post by davewalton » Sat Aug 05, 2006 7:17 am

Hi,A friend turned me on to Pandora.com (www.pandora.com). It's a site that is a "music genome project" where they play and categorize music by a wide variety of criteria. You can type in the name of a band or artist and the site will create a little radio program of songs and/or artists in that style and will also detail what is it about those bands that they have in common. For example, I picked "Maroon 5" a band that I know nothing about. It told me a little about why that band sounds like it does and gave a lot of specific information about the song that was playing called ""She Will Be Loved". Here is what it says are the features of this particular song:basic rock song structuresa subtle use of vocal counterpointa subtle use of vocal harmonyacoustic rhythm pianorepetitive melodic phrasingextensive vampingmixed acoustic and electric instrumentationmajor key tonalitymelodic songwritinga dynamic male vocalistprominent organromantic lyricsThat's pretty good information for targeting the sometimes hard-to-target listings. FYI,Dave

Thanks Dave. That could be useful. I'll bookmark it and run some ala's by it.

Hey yeah, Pandora is incredible! We've been listening to it for several months now and is fantastic. Not only for figuring out what aspects of songs but just for finding new music in general. We've found tons of new music, major and indie label. In fact, one of the bands we've recorded is even in there, that was exciting for us! I enjoy using it to research song a la's as well. Just type in the artists, and let it play while I'm doing menial tasks. Helps me prepare for writing a song in a specific genre. And the cool fact that you see what about the songs "make it". And another cool site...Along the same lines as Pandora yet completely different...http://www.musiclens.de/contest/You can plug in styles, eras, mood etc and it will spit back songs that fit the description. A fun little toy.Theresa
