Best Sounding Pop/Rock CD

Post by ernstinen » Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:28 pm

What do you think is the "Best Sounding" pop/rock CD?It has to have all the elements: Acoustic and electric guitars; great bass sounds; amazing drum kit; creative keyboard work; and fantastic vocals.I know there are the classics: Abbey Road; Dark Side Of The Moon, or Radiohead's "Kid A" etc.I really haven't heard anything, though, to compare with Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" (1994). I think producer Rick Rubin is a genius. --- I can't tell from the CD art if this is an AAD, ADD, or DDD. My guess is an AAD. It's just so bold, warm, and clear.Any opinions?Ern

I really like OK Computer and Perfect Circle's 13th Step for recording quality. My all time favorite though is Orb's ORBlivion. Even if electronica isn't your thing, this is an album worth checking out. It's a far departure from the typical Orb album....AND... All the the above mentioned sound better on vinyl. Not familiar with Wildflowers. Have to check it out.Z

"Wildflowers" is a guitar album. Folky rock & roll. Great drumming. Even orchestra on a few cuts. It reminds me of the Beatles White Album for its vibe for some reason. Probably ganga!Another guitar album from around that era that sounds HUGE is "Rhythmeen" by that lil' ol' band from Texas, ZZ Top. I think the mid-90's may have been the peak of great analog recordings, and then most producers switched over to digital.Of course, Steely Dan's "Aja" and "Gaucho" are classic sounding discs.Ern

Peter Gabriel's "So" is an obvious classic. Another great sounding album is "Joshua Judges Ruth" by Lyle Lovett, although I'm not sure that qualifies as "pop/rock"...although it's not really country either. It's just cool. matto

Quote:Peter Gabriel's "So" is an obvious classic."So" is a great recording. Unfortunately, I've got it on the old medium called "vinyl." But I do have a great playback medium (called "turntable"), so maybe I'll hook it up and give it a listen!Ern
