Can you make good $$ doing this??

Post by girlfriendx » Fri Apr 28, 2006 8:21 am

I'm a veteran songwriter looking to do this on the side. I've always been curious. Can you really make alot of money having songs placed in movies/tv shows? What about selling songs to artists? What is the least to the most amount of money that you've heard of someone making from placement?I'm just trying to decide if it's worth my time to market what I have. Thanks!

Seems like there's some hesitation to share actual $'s, for understandable reasons...but here are some random examples I've seen or dealt with (from lowest to highest fee paid/earned):3:00 song placed in indie film, $free (for exposure)0:30 theme with lyrics for web-based ad campaign, $free (to establish a business relationship)0:30 theme for kids audio book, $1001:30 anthem w/lyrics for web-based ad campaign, $500 0:60 theme for video game trailor $8503:00 song used in video game, $10001:30 anthem w/lyrics for web-based ad campaign, $2600+$300 per additional usage4:00 theme for political campaign, $30001:00 theme used in national corporate DVD series, $6k3:00 theme used in regional ad campaign, $75003:00 theme used for regional high-end car dealership, $15,0003:00 song used in video game, $50,00050:00 music for a video game, $80,000Some of these are licenses, and some are complete buyouts. As you can see, there really is no set fee rate; they can vary greatly depending on a project's budget and profile.Mind you, none of these examples are from Taxi...I don't have enough experience to talk about the real opportunities presented here. However, I don't see why they couldn't pan out generously if your music is excellent and appropriate.HTH,Andre

Quote:Not a bad week for you Andre! Wouldn't that be something! Boy, I'd be eating at Sizzler tonight. All of the examples above are real, but not all of them were my gigs...and they certainly didn't all happen in the same week.Like any of us, I'm just happy to be able to make music for a living...but we're always concerned about where the next job is coming from. So, it seems to make sense to be pursuing as many opportunities as possible; Taxi is just one of many.Speaking of which, I still haven't joined yet...I plan to do so as soon as I can focus some time on a few Taxi listings. In the meantime, it's great getting to know all of you on these boards!Andre
