Is this the worst deal or what? (names removed)

Here is a listing I ran into today:==========Composer needed for a pilot short drama with a view to being commercially broadcast in the UK. The drama is approx 30 mins long and touches on subjects of murder and extortion. The music would have to compliment the visual in a dramtic way so we are looking for a talented composer to work with us on this project. There is NO fee for this although a copy and credit will be provided. (at a charge). This is a great opportunity for aspiring composers to get their work heard and potentially reach a large audience whilst de-valuing your career a little. If the pilot goes into production, you will not get paid, but with our profit, we will reimburse you for the copy. We will own all rights to the music in exchange for the exposure you will get.Any future work with us will be unpaid since you originally agreed to work for free.==========Working for copy and credit can have future value, but they're so cheap that they're going to actually CHARGE the composer for a copy of the final product??!! (Cue sound of Dave slapping forehead with palm of hand) That in addition to owning all the rights to the music in exchange for "exposure". Of course the real generous part comes if or when the pilot starts making money, they still won't pay the composer but they'll reimburse him for what they charged for the copy of the project. And the best part is that all future work is expected to be done for free because of the original "work for free" agreement. If their goal is to get the worst, most desperate composer, they're on the right track. Everyone that's interested in "de-valuing their career a little" for these guys, raise their hands! Just when you start to think you've seen it all... Dave

Quote:Okay this is obviously a joke, guys! Where did you find this?I'm just passing along a listing on a real site. It came from a site that lists production jobs (editors, production assistants, etc). Mostly from no-name production companies but also more than just a few "heard of" names (Imax has a listing for a junior visual effects artist for example). This listing really beats the cake, though. The one before this one that got my award for "I can't believe they're serious" was a Japanese company doing a CD that wanted songs to be bought "outright" (giving up ALL rights) that weren't yet copyrighted or listed with ASCAP or BMI. I managed to pass on that one as well. Dave

I can't imagine any real company, even a stupid one, to say things like:"This is a great opportunity for aspiring composers to get their work heard and potentially reach a large audience whilst de-valuing your career a little." or "Any future work with us will be unpaid since you originally agreed to work for free." (they would let you find that one out later...the hard way )I mean these are the two major pet peeves composers have with working for free...I really can't imagine any company making the arguments why you shouldn't work with them for you... Sounds to me like some composer buddies made a bet...let's run the most ridiculous "composers wanted" ad we can think of and see if somebody actually responds...

I'm sure what Matt is saying is true. Either way, it's been a pleasure to bring you the entertainment portion of today's program.
