Music Business Resources

Post by elser » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:03 am

I'm wondering what organizations people find helpful for learning, promoting, inspiration or otherwise in the music business. I don't mean your PRO which is sort of a necessity, but maybe your local union is helpful to you(unlikely), or The Production Music Association, or a community arts organization, or Mazz's blog or whatever helps you grow, connect, move forward. Thanks, ElserP.S. please don't mention anyone who might be a direct competitor to Taxi.

Derek Sivers is always thinking of new ways to do things. He's easy to find on the internet.Mazz's blah blah blog is intermittent at best! TAXI has a good book list on their site:http://www.taxi.com/abouts/reading.htmlTwo of my favorites listed there are the Donald Passman book and Dan Kimpel's book (the version listed on TAXI is not the newest version, though!). Speaking of Dan Kimpel, his class a couple of Road Rally's ago really inspired me to up my game on the networking front and if you get a chance to go to the Rally, I highly recommend his class and just getting to meet him. He knows his stuff!!Also on that list: John Brahaney's book, Jai Josefs' book on music for hit songs is excellent, and Jimmy Webb's Tunesmith is a great read, IMO.I like this book because it takes you through the steps to write a business plan:http://www.amazon.com/Succeeding-Music- ... sr=8-1Just a few thoughts!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Thanks Mazz, I think I should have named this thread "Music Business Associations" or something to that extent. I'm thinking about places where people cooperate, something like the Taxi Forums, to share knowledge, get feedback, and rub elbows. But it might be things as varied as The Music Production Association, or Indaba, or a local songwriters association or a thursday night jam. I'm wondering which ones people have found most helpful. It's a pretty open question, so even if it's Facebook or Twitter if that's where you feel you have a positive and useful social network.(Hope that's clear)Thanks

DOH! I guess I don't hang with musicians much at all in my daily life and haven't taken the time to seek out things outside my studio and virtual world. Being a bookworm, I immediately went to my usual resources!I guess I need to get out more!I'm interested to see what groups folks are a part of. Thanks for posting and clarifying, Elser!Mazz

Ahem, you could check out the Artist's EDGE Membership. http://artists-edge.com/joinDepending on your genre, you may find organizations specific for the kind of music you play, like the Folk Alliance for folk, trad and acoustic music. Speaking of the NSAI, I'll be joining about a dozen other really awesome folks teaching for NSAI Songposium in Nashville in a few weeks. You can also search ning.com and groupsyahoo.com and google groups for groups focused around music. There's also Songsalive which has groups in different regions internationally.umm, that's all that comes to mind.Debra

Thanks Debra. I know there's lots of groups out there. I'm trying to narrow it down to the ones people feel are actually helpful and worth their time. Artist's Edged looks interesting. I'll be out of town for a few days but when I get back I'll check it out. Thanks again, Elser
