Pro Tools automatic fades!?

Post by sethlit » Fri Sep 23, 2011 8:34 am

Hey all! I've been trying to find ways to speed up my work. I figure since I can't add the amount of time I can work, then how can I increase my efficiency of the time that I do have? One major slow down for me are my pro tools editing skills. Now before you give me the easy answer of "switch to another, more efficient DAW"...I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather spend my money on new sound libraries (or at least contribute to my ongoing library credit card debt  )...then a new DAW. At least for the time being.

So...in Pro Tools, when you cut or paste a small portion of a track, is there any way to have a setting that puts a small automatic fade in (for beginning) and fade out (end) on it? You know, to not have that annoying click/pop sound if you haven't faded. I am currently running PT LE 8.0.5

I've looked to Google for answers but alas, can't find one. Apparently PT HD does this? Help? Anybody? :?

Hey Seth,

I'm using an older version of ProTools, but it's probably the same. For a fade in, you click where you want the fade in to end and go Alt-G. For a fade out, you click where you want it to start and go Alt-D. You can also use the edit window to do these commands.

Hope this works!

Hey Seth,

When it comes to editing audio, I'd make the argument that Pro Tools IS the more efficient DAW, especially if you spend some time learning how to use all the shortcuts and key commands (composing with VI's however is a different argument :-(). But to answer your question... I don't think there is a setting in the non-HD versions that allows for automatic crossfades, which I believe is what you're asking about.

Here's my workflow process for your scenario. After I copy/paste a part, I make sure that I've got the "smart tool" selected (F6+F7 together I believe). Then I make sure I'm in slip mode (use the Esc key to cycle through the various modes). I then zoom in on my track (using Ctrl-] and Ctrl-[ combinations), hover over the "split" so that my cursor turns into the crossfade tool, then click and drag the crossfade to the desired amount. Repeat the process for the other side. Done. If you get used to using the shortcuts, it will really speed up your editing workflow.

I might be crazy, but I really enjoy editing in Pro Tools. The workflow is really easy once you learn the in's and out's.

Not sure about LE but in TDM you can

Preferences > Operation > {option called MISC at bottom" auto region fade in out"

Its by the Cal level.Keep to a small value ie 1 or 2ms or you run the danger of fading transients out.

If its not there on LE you can also zoom out.Swipe across all the regions you want to edit. Hit " Apple+F "

That brings up the fade dialogue and you can apply fades across all regions at once. Good luck:) If your using Tools alot, I agree with Seth.Learn the short codes. You'll be staggered at the workflow increase once you know even the basic ones for zoom/fade etc.

Can't remember if it's ProTools or Sonar that STILL doesn't have a global option to to force all edits to the nearest zero crossing; this eliminates the pops, and any need for auto cross-fades. I think Barry's probably right about P/T's efficiency; that's what it's made for, efficient editing. (it sure ain't made to sound purty) Means you probably just need to study up on keyboard shortcuts and examine your workflow, screensets and preferences.

Yes, I was sorta curious whether or not Pro Tools had a global option to force all edits to the nearest zero crossing. I don't think LE has this.

I worked out a rock instrumental today with lots of edits...and man does the zoom shortcuts help speed things up. Thanks for the tip! Can't believe I haven't been using that till now

silversun- I don't believe LE has the auto region fade option but I'll check it out tomorrow.

Thanks all!
