Pro Tools Newbie needs HELP!!!

Post by Torch » Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:55 pm

I recently purchased an Avid Mbox 003 that came bundled with Pro Tools version 8.0.4 plus a DVD instructional tutalorial. Problem is, the tutorial does not delve into detail, and I am a DETAIL kinda guy. Some people are able to sit at a computer for the first time, with Pro Tools booted up on the screen, and have the ability to "grasp it" quickly....so they are creating tracks within 30 minutes. But me? I admit, Pro Tools 8 has me struggling. I am aware that there are various Pro Tools 8 instructional books and DVD's on the market, but what to choose? Which one is most-able to empower ANY reasonably-intelligent newbie, to be up 'n runnin'...and creating smiles? If anyone here has ANY suggestions, please...I would be grateful. Whether it be a DVD or textbook tutorial, I am seeking recommendations from my good folks here at the Taxi Forum. Thank you in advance!!!!

Panting & Sweating.....

Have you tried the manual? That's where they usually put the detailed info. :D

Great info guys! I wasn't aware of a lot of these tutorials out there :) This will be a big help to me as well!!

Torch, good luck on this! :) I'm a ProTools newb as well - I got a great book on Pro Tools LE 7 and Powered 7 - ( I have 8.04 LE) - written by an engineer, Gina Fant-Saez. It's called "ProTools for Musicians and Songwriters." It's a teeny bit outdated, obviously, but still a great resource - the stuff that is outdated is easy to figure out, just slight updates. The great thing about the book is it is spelled out in ways that non-techie songwriters can understand, I'm a singer/songwriter, but am starting to really get comfortable with ProTools, cuz of this book.
Also, Avid's forums are helpful too.

HTH, and have fun with it!

Cher :)

If you don't mind spending a little money, the best Pro Tools how to vids can be found at Groove 3 productions. For that matter their instructional vids on anything are excellent. They have great stuff on music production, mixing, vocal recording, and how to's for several of the popular DAWs and plug ins. I've used several of their vids and found them very helpful. For Pro Tools specifically they helped me go from beginner to advanced intermediate user in matter of weeks.

Hi torch

I ditto everything said. Plus, I have a lot of books and videos on pro tools but the thing that helped me the most was the book " Pro tools LE 7 IGNITE. the visual guide for new users"

See if they have it in your version.

Don't be shy about asking questions.....I do it every week.
