Re: Punk Thing update
Well it's been an interesting learning experience. I've been bouncing around different genre's, trying to see where I fit in. They all seem to have such an impact on me, so it's always kinda hard to narrow it down to a single genre. Punk Thing was my first go at producing something that would sound like a punk rocker. My goal was to create something a bit more modern sounding, so I layered 4 tracks of guitar to get that sound. Strip away the layers and you got this one guitar doing it's thing. There always seems to be that one song, a simple 3 chord rocker that seems to grab people. "I wanna be sedated" "American Idiot" "Dancing with myself" are a couple that come to mind. There's a lot more to punk than just 3 chords. Another interesting genre to explore, fun part is the research.

Kim, I hear ya man! I'm kinda like you in that it's hard to just pick one, and I like to write in different genres. What gets me more and more is how big of an impact something so subtle can have sometimes. Man a learning experience for me too. It's humbling to hear what people think about my stuff... but invaluable also.

Re: Punk Thing update
Hey kim, just had a listen to your track. I'm not up on modern punk, so i'll focus mainly on the mix/production. First, i should say that i started listening and i had to restart the track 2 times, because it just lost my attention. I still couldn't find anything appealing for my ears to latch onto once i made myself focus on listening. Im not trying to sound like a jerk, im just being honest, at the risk of it being beneficial. Please dont take it personally. The mix sounds too distant, especially since it is simply instrumentals. Each instrument should explode with excitement since you don't have to mix vocals into the arrangement- which are the focal point for most listeners. The guitars sound too narrow, stereo image tools are one quick way to expand the width. They also sounded kinda dull/bland to me. Noise gates can help with the 'snappiness' for the Rguitar tracks, and filters can do a lot of things to 'build excitement,' leading you somewhere. (sweeps, modulation, etc.)I heard a few timing issues with the guitars/bass, which should be fixed IMO, but maybe was intentional. I agree with the drum comments mentioned above, i however have to disagree with patrick on the guitar EQ analysis. The guitar sounds a bit flat and there were some midrange frequencies (which i couldnt distinguish to a certainty), that were fatiguing to my ears. I think you may have too many frequency crossovers in the 1k and at the 2.5-5k range. I think adding some high end air would help the guitars breathe a bit more. My recommendations would be trying to re-slot the EQ "niches" for each instrument in your mix.Just my thoughts, hope it helps. Cheers
