Q's about lyrics sheets

Post by andreh » Tue Sep 19, 2006 11:14 pm

Hey all-I'm preparing to submit my first Taxi song ever (yay!), for listing #Y060922NS. I have a few questions regarding the lyric sheet:1. Is is typical to include what the backup vocals are singing? How are they delineated?2. What do you call the part between the verse and the chorus? I've heard it called a lift, transition, pre-chorus, and even 1st/2nd/3rd bridge.3. Do you write out slang pronunciations?3. What other information should be present? Here's the current lyrics sheet; the backup parts are in brackets:"Fallin' Down"©2006 Andre HothVerse:The sun isn't out and you're runnin' out a' liesGot my blue shades on but all I'm seein' is redOutta sight ain't outta mind, got me blind [I'm tryin' to be givin'] I'm tryin' to be givin', so I'm takin' nothin' from you [You keep me guessin']But the message ya' twistin', you keep me guessin' But it's finally comin' to me that the reason forBein' together was never forever for you, now I see clearly [Now I see clearly] Transition:Promises fade, price that you paid [Promises fade, price that you paid, taken for a ride]Taken for a ride, was it by design or thrown awayLife that we made, glad you can say [Life that we made, glad you can say, gave it all you couldn't]Gave it all you couldn't, what ya left me with is hell to pay Chorus:So I'm fallin' down, down, down, down, downPut my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down down [Down, down, down, down, down, down, down]Never was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slowSo I'm fallin' down down down down downPut my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down down [Down, down, down, down, down, down, down]Never was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slowBridge:Yeah, yeah, we was flyin' high , 'bout to hit the skyTurned da needin', bleedin' more than a man can surviveWhy was I tryin' ta get back? Never even had thatYeah, woulda, shoulda done laid that smack downHit that burn, admit that...d'ya learn ya lesson son? I'm done with youAh ha ha, b-boo-ho, grippin' a new job to knock it downWhat's goin' 'round is comin' back I'm takin' the slackI played the fool but now the rules is changin' Transition:Promises fade, price that you paid [Promises fade, price that you paid, taken for a ride]Taken for a ride, was it by design or thrown awayLife that we made, glad you can say [Life that we made, glad you can say, gave it all you couldn't]Gave it all you couldn't, what ya left me with is hell to pay Chorus:So I'm fallin' down, down, down, down, down['Bout to hit the sky]Put my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down down[Down, down, down, down, down, down, down]Never was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slowSo I'm fallin' down down down down downPut my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down down[Down, down, down, down, down, down, down][Yeah, yeah, we was flyin' high]Never was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slow[Yeah, woulda, shoulda done laid that smack down]TIA,Andre

Andre,When the background vocals are repeating the lead lyrics, there is no need to include them. I've found it important when pitching to make your lyrics as simple and short as possible. (In my experience, having only one verse will bring criticism from the screeners. ) Here's how I'd do your song if it were mine..."Fallin' Down"©2006 Andre HothVerse 1:The sun isn't out and you're runnin' out a' liesGot my blue shades on but all I'm seein' is redOutta sight ain't outta mind, got me blindI'm tryin' to be givin', so I'm takin' nothin' from youBut the message ya' twistin', you keep me guessin' But it's finally comin' to me that the reason forBein' together was never forever for you, now I see clearlyPre-Chorus:Promises fade, price that you paidTaken for a ride, was it by design or thrown awayLife that we made, glad you can sayGave it all you couldn't, what ya left me with is hell to payChorus:So I'm fallin' down, down, down, down, downPut my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down downNever was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slowSo I'm fallin' down down down down downPut my trust in your arms and you're lettin' goSo I'm fallin' down down down down downNever was the kind to rush, but this pain is so so slowBridge:Yeah, yeah, we was flyin' high , 'bout to hit the skyTurned da needin', bleedin' more than a man can surviveWhy was I tryin' ta get back? I'm done with youAh ha ha, b-boo-ho, grippin' a new job to knock it downWhat's goin' 'round is comin' back I'm takin' the slackI played the fool but now the rules is changin' Pre-Chorus:Chorus:Good luck!!!!Nomi

Quote: 1. Is is typical to include what the backup vocals are singing? How are they delineated? Not unless they are saying something essential that's not in the "main" lyrics (a good example of this is the Son Of The Desert's Bg vocal part on LeeAnn Womack's "I Hope You Dance")Quote:2. What do you call the part between the verse and the chorus? I've heard it called a lift, transition, pre-chorus, and even 1st/2nd/3rd bridge. Pre-chorus or setup seem to be the most commonly used terms, I would strongly advise against "bridge" as this is usually reserved for the...ahem...BRIDGE Quote:3. Do you write out slang pronunciations?Personally I find "slang pronounciation" annoying and hard to read, I would always write "giving" even though everybody says "givin'"But that's just a personal preference, and I think it depends on the style of music to some degree.Quote:4. What other information should be present?Copyright, name, phone number, email.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It looks like Broadjam has activated the song, so I'm off to submit! After making some suggested changes to the lyric sheet, that is. Quote:In my experience, having only one verse will bring criticism from the screeners.Nomi, do you think screeners would be more accepting of a song with 2 verses and no bridge? Since this song's bridge is actually a rap over the verse chord progression, I suppose I could label it that way instead. It does feel more like a bridge, though, in the way it directs the song.Andre
