Rally open mic idea - what do you think?
Hi everyone. I spoke to the gentleman who MCd the open mic about this at one of the luncheons last year and he thought it was a good idea, but I wanted to see what you all thought as well. What if we drop our tickets in the box on the nights you and your friends actually attend the open mics. That way if you know you'll be there and want to perform on night 2 your name isn't in the box for night 1 or night 3 - and if your not called to perform when your there you can take your ticket back to drop it in the next days box, should you attend. That way we avoid the really numerous stretches of time involved in calling person after person who isn't there. Or, is this just a fluke that happened last year and isn't usually an issue?Just a thought - please let me know if you think its a good idea and if its ok to email this in to Taxi without sounding presumptuous.

Re: Rally open mic idea - what do you think?
Hey Anne,Well that's a lonely little post there - 100 reads and no replies? Come on guys!It struck me funny because I attended a road rally oh, 7 or 8 years ago (I think it might have been the second one?), and I could swear that's exactly how they did it! Are you saying that now they make you drop your ticket in for the entire weekend?? That seems really inefficient! I wonder why they would have changed to that system?Hmmmm...

I hear what you're saying (and I was away when this post was made so never saw it) but I guess the question is, if you didn't get called and you want your ticket to stay in for the next night, how will you find your ticket at the end of the night when the box is full of 1,000 other tickets?

Not sure I understand the question, hummingbird. Are you saying you'd have to dig your ticket out of the box in order to put it into the box for the next night?Yes, I guess that's a valid point, but I don't think they used tickets back then. As I recall, you put your name on a piece of paper and dropped it in the box.Perhaps they had to go to a "ticket" system because too many unscrupulous people were writing their names on more than one piece of paper...In that case, I don't know what the answer is. I'll ponder it.

As this will be my first Road Rally, I'll be following this thread for the next few days, even WHILE I'm in NYC. Since, by timing, I will have no interest in my name being called on the night of the 8th for the open mic, I'll be eager to hear how this develops.Ted

Ah, my lonely little post is finally being seen!!!My idea is that you show them your ticket and you are put / you sign up on a list for that night. If you are called you give them your ticket (so you can't play on another night). That way we don't have all the time taken up (which was fairly substantial) where the names are pulled out of the box and we sit and wait to see if those people are there, and then also you are only signing up to play on the night you actually will be going thus the "list" of potential performers is much shorter. This is a little different than my original idea.I went all 3 nights last year and the size of the attendees was small enough that there wouldn't be a big jam getting signed up to play, imho.Thoughts?PS - Ted - are you driving or flying (from NM)?

Hey, Anne.Check your regular email... And so far, this is good to hear. I had been wondering about need to sit through/endure three nights of cattle-call open mics (and with no guarantee of getting called up at all), something I'm not sure I'd be up for. Keep this thread alive and keep me posted.Ted

It does seem like a time-waster. Waiting around for no-shows is irritating, and probably a dozen more people could play if that time was used effectively.Have you suggested your idea to Taxi? Just send them an email. It's getting pretty close though, and they may not be able to adjust this quickly to a new way of doing it... but I'm sure they will consider your suggestion,Why don't they have a sign-up list at the door? So, like you show your ticket in order to sign up, and if you are called you hand in your ticket. If you aren't called, you are free to sign up on one of the other nights. If you are called, and aren't there, you're put on a 'do not allow to play' list - meaning you lost your priviledge & your ticket will be confiscated if you try to sign up again. Would that work?cheersHummin'bird

Re: Rally open mic idea - what do you think?
Hi Vikki - that's pretty much what I thought would work. I just felt weird saying "hey, what about this idea" when I'd only been to one rally. I'll email taxi today about it. Ted - what a small world NM is, isn't it?

Hey, Anne. mighty small, indeed...considering what a huge state it is. (happy accident, you guys; Anne and I are on the same flight to LA.)And Vikki's right. What could it hurt to ask? I'll be eager to hear...Ted
