Still needs a way to go, IMHO.First of all, you are a GREAT singer. I know that guys like John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix HATED their own voices, but like them, you shouldn't be ashamed of your voice. You need to have confidence in it, and turn it UP!As a producer/engineer, I'd like to hear this with all the compression turned OFF and the vocal BLASTING out of the speakers. THEN some of us "Ol' pros" could give you a realistic idea of what you're going for. I'd be happy to help!Try a mix with NO compression and turn your vocals up to the point your dog pisses on your rug and your neighbors call the cops. Jus' kiddin' of course ---Best Regards,Ern

Nice job, Matt! This is definitely a good ole' country song. I agree with Ern -- MORE VOCALS! Pump 'em up. You have an awesome voice -- let it show!It also feels as though everything is mixed too much in the middle right now -- can you pan things around more directionally?? And I wonder about adding a lap steel guitar or a fiddle for accenting??Thanks for sharing your process on this! Suz

Matt,One more thing about a vocal performance:I was engineering a few years ago for a songwriter who brought in a GREAT vocalist. The songwriter - "producer" had the control on the project.Well, this singer was FANTASTIC, and sang the song on the FIRST TAKE! I was blown away by his emotion, pitch, just everything was right on the money. Then the "producer" started to take it all apart, wanting certain "diction," "vowel sounds" etc.NOW, I'm sitting there being paid by the hour, but I had to tell the "producer" he was full of shit. I said "This is a PERFECT take! Don't rip it apart with your ego!"Well, that didn't go down too well, so we did more vocal takes for the next 6 hours, with each one getting worse and worse. The vocal ended up what the "producer" wanted, but it was nothing like the 1st take.So my point is, DON'T overthink or analyze your own vocals. When it's right, just let it be! --- You may need to EQ or compress your PERFORMANCE, but if you have a great vocal track that has emotion and nuance, KEEP it and work with it to make it sound BIG like you want it to. There are a lot of ways to do that besides re-recording it.Food for thought,Ern

Thanks Ern and Suz,Its not being ashamed of my voice. Ive sung for oh 30+years inchoirs, bands, in front of large crowds. I have lots of recordings from my early days. Its the sound I got with the mic. Ill post it for you completely dry. Well I used a mild compression to track it.It came out very midrangy like those old ribbon mics the boxing announcers used to use. At least thats what it sounds like to me.Ill let you hear the dry signal before mixing. Maybe its jsut me.I actually have things panned but maybe not enough. Ill remix. This is great help yall! Thanks guys and gals!M~

Ern - "Try a mix with NO compression and turn your vocals up to the point your dog pisses on your rug and your neighbors call the cops" Nice song Matt, I'm not at a technical level yet but this sounds good to me, definitely turn up the vocal though, you have a great voice! Nice hook too.Linzi
