It's easy to describe what you want to do on a computer but sometimes proves a bit more difficult. Let's review:1. Audacity on your computer harddrive2. M-Audio USB interface3. Monitor through the interface - most efficientThere should be software and drivers for your interface that allow you to customize your monitoring options. That sounds like a winner to me! Thanks. so you think my netbook will be able to run with the M-audio FastTrackPro USB? the MobilePre would need less in regards to processor and RAM.The FastTrack Pro requires at least 500MHz and 256MB RAMI only have 900MHz and 2GB of RAM

Well, there are tradeoffs between the 2:The FastTrack Pro has more input and monitoring options, but at a higher CPU cost. The other has only a 1/8" headphone input and has fewer I/O options at a lower CPU cost.If it were ME and MY computer, I would probably take the small risk and get the Pro model. Since, if you're running Audacity, you won't be running CPU-intensive VSTs or other effects, it should be fine. That's assuming all other things are equal and the machine isn't infested with spyware, viruses, or anything else bogging it down. I would go with the pro model. That way, when you're ready to upgrade the computer, you won't be inclined to upgrade your interface, because you will already have a pro-level piece.

I was able to strip XP down so its faster. that might help.

I think you're gonna want to download Reaper; you'll want to have the option to sweeten a track or two at a time with VST effects. You probably won't have enough horsepower for fancy convolution reverbs, but a little chorus and echo can go a long way, and some kind of compression/EQ is essential.

If you need a CD/DVD drive, buy an external device and run it for installation purposes and than disconnect it. Hope you will get everything to work satisfying.
