Recording
Hey folks!
Does anyone know what is meant when you have a return for "Recording?" I'm looking for feedback that will help me get better at producing a finished product. Thanks!!!

Re: Recording
yeah it means some of the instruments were not recorded well or mixed bad. I have found that some of the usual culprits are background noise, cheap mics or maybe even in the mixing ( harsh freqs )
it could be many things thou.
if you want, you can post a link to the song. Many of the folks here will listen and tell you what they think
Very smart of you wanting to know more and to go to the next level.

Re: Recording
ACP, what keyboard samples are you using? I listened to your songs on reverbnation. I thought everything sounded great and really organic, but the keyboard and piano sounded like maybe the samples were dated.

Thanks for the feedback! Len911, I am using Halion 3 but I'm seriously considering a switch to East West Composers Collection.

I really like the mixes and the over all vibe of your tunes. But I would agree with Len on the piano sounds.Len911 wrote:ACP, what keyboard samples are you using? I love Rhodes piano and I am often drawn to a patch that sounds similar to the ones you used. And when I play it for a good friend of mine, whose opinion I value, he says "It's nice, but what if you change the e piano patch". 9 times out of 10 he is right and it sounds better.
I also hear quite a bit of bright end on the acoustic piano - and to my ears, it sounds a little thin.
But I think the overall production is on the right track.
Cheers -

Have you checked out the Sampletekk instruments? I picked up a couple this year and really like how they sit in the mix. They are quickly becoming my goto acoustic piano. I don't have any of their e-pianos, but they are high on my wishlist.

Re: Recording
For electric piano, sonivox has the suitcase piano or rhodes, and a wurlitzer. They are fairly inexpensive and sound good, you can download them for a free trial, before committing to buy them. They are $30 a piece. Whenever you buy one they always send you an email for 10% off your next purchase, and everyday there are usually a couple of their downloadable instruments that are on sale for a bigger savings.

Re: Recording
My best success with a Rhodes has been with 2 tracks. 1st track - get the sound of the tines. You'll need to EQ a little brighter for this and your velocities will need to be higher or harder. 2nd track - get the sound of the rest of the piano. The EQ will be flatter and you can more or less play the piano normally. Midi of course makes all this much easier! Mix the 2 tracks together and I think you'll like the sound much more than one simple track as it has more dimension.

Re: Recording
I am pretty unhappy with East West's Steinway... there is a lot of noise in the tails that has me using expansion at the end of a track.
