Respect

Post by sgs4u » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:03 am

My father's credo was -Earn respect carefully with your actions, and each time you open your mouth.Shakabrah has posted that you get no respect here on the Taxi forums if you use a different name, other than your real one.Does anyone have opinions on this?

I've seen trolls come into songwriting boards, raise a ruckus, get banned. They usually have a screen name and don't identify themselves. That's because they've been harrassing folks, etc.OTOH lots of people, including me, have 'callsigns', nicknames, whatever you want to call them. You are totally free to express an opinion under your callsign. You are free to express opinions that differ than another members opinions. You are free to disagree openly. Where anyone crosses the line is when the discussion changes from "I think this about that, here's why" and "well, I think that about this, here's why" to.... "look, you loser, I think this about that, get with the program" and "just a sec, you degenerate, I think that about this, if you don't agree with me you're $&%^#$&". In that case, it's all about "winning the argument", not about sharing and appreciating opposite points of view."People do not want to be told how they should think, and that they are wrong if they disagree with you. ..If you are the one being shut out because of your inability to listen, it is because you are so attached to what you already believe that you insist on making everyone who disagrees with you wrong. ... For every idea that you absolutely know is right, there are millions of people who believe that you are wrong.""... When you encounter someone who believes something quite different from you, and you try to explain how wrong he is, all you have done is define yourself. Your position will most likely make him more adamant about his beliefs. So encounters of this nature almost always end up with each person more firmly convinced than ever of the rightness of his position.""Seldom do people stop and truly hear what the other person has to say. Seldom if ever do we change our mind based upon solid ideas presented by others. And virtually never are we able to hold two contrary opinions and beliefs in our mind simultaneously. Yet this is precisely what is required of you in order to awaken to a new level of human consciousness: an internal awareness that an opposite point of view can be held simultaneously with your own, and no need to make other's wrong."~Dr. Wayne W Dyer"The test of first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them better."~ F. Scott FitzgeraldHummingbird

I'm not near young or foolish enough to leave my real name on forums or other websites where people can easily target you for all kinds of crap. The question is... what does it matter what my real name is anyway? My opinion will be the same. You either respect folks, or you don't.

When you come off as angry and abusive all the time, the point you're trying to make becomes tarnished. When you're "waiting to talk," you aren't listening. Is "Shakabrah" a real name? I don't think so. And from my experiences of seeing trolls come and go, a VERY common technique of belittling someone who doesn't agree with you is trotting out the "Nazi" theme. THAT is one of the most horrible things you could ever say about someone. It proves you have NO tolerance for opposing views and adult conversation. Talk about disgusting, angry, and immature.BTW, almost everyone here has a forum nickname. You can find the real names and websites of most of us by clicking on our nickname. --- One thing I find odd, though, is not fessing up to what gender you are. Why would you want to hide that? Peace,Ern

funny, I used Vikki's post as a comment on my own behaviour. Yes, I have been mischievious, by reading posts and commenting on them without enough forethought. All opinions are OK with me, unless they affect my children in a way that I choose to see as detrimental.

sorry guys - getting and showing respect to others has nothing to do if you publish on a forum like this your real name or not.basically who is respectfull to others got treated respectfull.I can only remember to one or two posts as a reply to my writing which were missing some respect - and after a "..calm down.." post all was ok again.

I can see the gender thing Erns. I would simply hate it if Nomi or Pitterpatter were daydreaming about me in my speedo at my computer.
