RESULT TRACKING SPREADSHEET

Post by bmete » Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:17 am

Hi,One of the key issues I tool from the Road Rally was the 5 year plan and working your craft just like a business. When I look at my submission history I see lots of the same tunes submitted multiple times. Treating each song as a product, I view each critique as important market research. I found it awkward to bounce between critiques to see if there were any consistencies (Good or Bad ) between the categories. Reading a lot of the forum threads I also noticed a lot of people are confused by how one screener would love something and another pan it. So using an excel spreadsheet I put a very simple spreadsheet together that will allow the tracking of a given song up to 10 times. ( If you are familiar with excel you can add as many lines as needed, just double check the total formulas.) There are two tabs on the bottom one for non-vocal tunes and one for vocal tunes. ( two because the tally totals are different between vocal and no vocal.)to use, On the orange colored bar where it says put song name here, simply type your songs name, then take the critique scores and enter the numeric value in the appropriate column.,then under the second orange bar you'll see a small shaded box, put the total number of critiques in there. this will keep the percentages (* averages ) accurate. ( note until you put numbers in the columns you'll see a #div/0! error message- don't worry about that, it will disappear once you enter data. Also on the first song I put random number in the columns to demonstrate the spreadsheet, just high- light the numbers (in the white area only) and erase or delete them.If you are tracking many songs you can cut and paste it as needed. If you have questions or problems, I'll be glad to help!It is an EXCEL Spreadsheet titled Result Trackinghttp://www.reddproductions.net/reynovia/RESULTTRACKING.xlsBob

hey bob,I think your xls sheet is a good idea, especially for those who submit regularly the same songs.what the xls doesn't reflect is whether a song did fit a particular listing or not - and this point can be very important (I just get a return and a "all 10's" result - for the same song, but for two diffrent listings). hmmm... maybe that's two diffrent topics: one is your craft as a writer/performer/arranger/producer (the results about engineering, performance etc), the other topic is the one I mentioned - understanding the listings, interpret them correctly and get a "feeling" for what track fits which listings.anyway - thinking about these things is very educational, so definitely a good idea!cheers, martin

Hi Martin,I'm glad you mentioned the part about whether the song was on target for the listing. I modified the spreadsheet with that in mind. I added a on target column, a forwarded column. At this point why not complete the process so I added a company forwarded to, contact name or e-mail, and columns for follow up.Thanks for your input! Here's the new spreadsheet!Result Tracking Spreadsheet version #2http://www.reddproductions.net/reynovia/RESULTTRACKING.xlsBob

Spreadsheets like this are great. Over the years I've talked to so many folks who have pitched their music all over the place and then have no idea what they sent to who... When you get "the call" or "the email" with interest it's good to have these details so you can speak (or write) more intelligently. Obviously, it's great for TAXI submissions. Great idea!! But the concept also applies to any pitching you do. Keep records! They come in handy! They can save your butt one day! Casey

Especially when you can get "the call" sometimes a year after submitting. Keeping records certainly saved my butt...
