Returns
Hiya Folks
My name is Eugene and Ive been a member of Taxi for approx 3/4 months.Since joining I have replied to 14 or so opportunities for music mainly in the dance, soul area.I have studied music at degree level and more and have been published and had music released in Europe and the UK, however not a single track has been forwarded. This evening I got another return, this time it was the vocal? Thing is I am a singer and I actually work as a singer.
Now I know that I may seem sour as I rant on. I appreciate that the tracks have to be appropriate to keep the quality high but this is doing my head in.Just last week I had a top Italian dance label release a track that Taxi deemed lyrically off. Now I see dispatch emails offering a fast track..hmmm. I dunno, Im gonna work on my craft as I always have but I dont hold my breath for a success here? Id like to know if this has happened to anyone? did you eventually get tracks through? Lets hope Im wrong as ive committed myself now. Wishing all the Musos and songwriters of the world a Merry Christmas and New Year.

Re: Returns
Hey Static:
Not unusual. If you post a link to your music on the peer to peer forum, you'll get more exposure, and you'll see if the people on the forum agree or disagree with the screeners. Good luck to you, and Season's Greetings!

Re: Returns
I've found that with most of the tracks I had returned it was not necessarily the quality of the track, but rather the appropriateness for the particular listing.
I've only been a member for about a year, but one thing I certainly learned is that TAXI screeners are looking for a very close match to what they (!) are envisioning the TAXI client wants to hear. For example, if there is a reference artist or group mentioned in the listing, they usually want to hear something that very very close to the referenced artist.
So, don't let it get you down and think that there's something wrong with your tracks - they just weren't matches (again, in the screener's subjective ears) for the listings you submitted too.
With the feedback about your vocals, it's another example for subjective expectation. So, screeners are looking for particular aspects in a voice, and sometime those aspects (like Timbre) don't have so much to do with technical proficiency.
Just my two cents.
Happy Holidays!

Re: Returns
Welcome!
I think it's very difficult to explain why your songs were denied. And about your vocal, it can be that it didn't fit the listing, or envisioned what the screener wanted. But don't give up, keep sending. I had my share of returns in the beginning as well.
I would also recommend that you add a link to 1 song in the peer to peer section.

Re: Returns
Hi staticboy - hang in there! It sounds as if you are already very successful indeed, and I'm sure it's just a matter of time until TAXI chooses some of your work - then, it might open the flood gates for you, if a producer likes your stuff. I, on the other hand am at the bottom of the learning curve, so I expect to be rejected a few hundred times while I'm still learning. I try to submit stuff that comes with a critique, some of the comments are really helpful, and they help me improve (cos I need to!).
All the best - good luck!

Re: Returns
You asked if anyone gets forwards. I joined TAXI in 2004, and since then I have struggled to get music to the level that it would be forwardable (an education in itself). I got my first forward in December of 2006. That actually ended up being a deal, signed in March of 2008. I got my next forward in March of 2007, which ended up being a deal, signed in June of 2007. I've signed nearly 60 tracks since joining TAXI, some as a result of TAXI forwards, and some as a result of pitches outside of TAXI. The education I get as a member of TAXI, and as someone who attends the Road Rally, is well worth the membership fee for me, which is why I continue to be a member myself. However, I continue to get returns, and that is frustrating, but I use TAXI's screening process as a measure of my ability to write for a specific opportunity with specific criteria that must be met.
I thought this article, mentioned in Michael's most recent newsletter, was very good. We all hate to be branded or constrained... but we are also attempting to 'sell' a product to a marketplace... but do we write music first, and then ask where it fits... or do we look at where it needs to fit, and write specifically for that.

Re: Returns
Hey thanks again. It gives me some comfort to hear from fellow musicians that have had experience getting knock backs. I am going to focus my submissions to meet the criteria more closely. Hope 2010 is a good un!
