Reviews can be subjective and misleading
I find that in order to get a meaningful opinion that it is best if I submit a song multiple times. Then you takes the praise, which is nice, but not always helpful - along with the occasional bitchy ones, or the ones from someone who probably wasn't listening - and you then filter out all that and look for the nuggets of suggestion that actually can help to make a song better. The one thing I will often find is that different reviewers have different opinions and if someone tells you to change something, like half the song, get a second, third, fourth and tenth opinion as well - because those opinions are different you might think twice. Also everyone has their own favorite styles and genres and things that they are used to hearing, which also leads me to conclude that one needs many more than one opinion before making major changes.

It is also common to get recommendations based on the listing, rather than the merits of the song. I've seen several people post good songs (that didn't Quite fit the listing) with recommendations on how to make it fit the listing better, but not in any way helping the song as it is! Take all criticism (and praise for that matter) with agrain of salt. It is best to trust your instincts and people whose ears you respect. The Peer to Peer section is a good place to get some good feedback!

I submitted the same song to two different listings. Both submissions were returns. The advice and comments on the song were very different; it was the same reviewer. Guess he heard it differently one day than the next? So who's advice do I take. The first reviewer or the first reviewer?

The first reviewer or the first reviewer?Hi Celeste,May I suggest that you post the song, the listings and both reviews. It would be interesting to see first hand what you are talking about here.It may be that the screener was really and truly listening to the song both times with the listing in mind and actually did hear it differently depending on the listing. Or it could be something else entirely. It would be informative to see what you are referring to.I went to your website. Nice house!!Cheers!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Not to help Mazz hijack the thread TOO much, but it would be really cool to see Celeste's listings and critiques too.I'm just being selfish here Deciphering and incorporating feedback is my current 48-ish month project.

Actually I think it would support the thread because part of the OPs assertion is that only from multiple reviews (probably more than two) can you begin to see a pattern develop. Two reviews only may very well seem contradictory, but if certain patterns crop up, then maybe it's something to look at.That's also where peer to peer can be valuable, as well.Of course, the reviewee has to be open to the information and willing to learn.Yes, multiple reviews are very helpful.Mazz
