Revising a Psychedelic Indie Rock Instrumental

I got the following feedback on a track recently. I can't say that I disagree with the critique but I'm not sure where to go with the track. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

PSYCHEDELIC INDIE ROCK INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a NON-Exclusive Production Music Library that needs to build up its stash in this genre to meet demand. They’re on the hunt for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues that you’d hear on playlists with bands like (but not limited to) Night Beats, White Fence, The Warlocks, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get in the stylistic ballpark of what they’re looking for:

“Puppet on a String” by Night Beats

“Swagger Vets & Double Moon" by White Fence

“So Paranoid” by The Warlocks

Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this pitch.

Give them well-crafted Psychedelic Indie Rock Instrumental Cues that are gritty and have a contemporary Indie vibe. Instrumentation should be that of a typical Rock Band, with guitar, bass, drums, and a healthy amount of reverb to give your Cue an authentic Psychedelic sound. Build your Cue around a central melodic theme while adding and subtracting layers of Instrumentation as your track progresses to add dynamics and keep it from sounding too repetitive or linear. Avoid guitar solos in the higher register, and anything else that could distract from a scene’s dialogue.

Hey Dan,

I like your piece and I think( to my ear) it fits the Warlocks track the best.. if there is one think I might hear that's different (missing?) .it's the retro/analog feel of the referenced tracks.. perhaps some use of some old plate reverb or analog tape emulations might help

The first 2 tracks to my ear sound so much like late 60's acid rock( Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane,etc -standards of my youth...) which used TONS of reverb in the production..maybe look for a balance between the referenced tracks and the old 60's rock classics..

Hi Dan I lived thru those times. ha ha Solid sound, but it does not sound psychedelic to me? I might be 100% wrong. It just needs something more and I am not sure what. Love your stuff:)

To my ear, it could use a sitar-like element or a wah or talkbox with heavy 'verb and delay.

Psychedelic=soup, mixwise, in my mind. For psychedelic, sparse is bad. Clean is bad.

Just my two cents.

Hey Dan, bummer about that bad trip man!

I think it sounds good too and has good elements coming in and out.

My two cents would be for an Adrian Belew type feedback lead [with some modulation / time based effects ] to come up the middle. A warmish sound not set too far back. Something to take centre stage now and then, maybe at 0.44.

At 1.05 i think you need another element to come in, it seems a bit sparse there.

Yeah and a sitar wouldn't sound out of place.

Les, I like your idea about the feedback lead. I'm gonna try some plate reverb and tape emulations too, John. Talkbox and Sitar will be plan B & C if I can find a sound worth tracking.

BTW, I posted the wrong listing but I can't find the right one. The correct listing had Black Angels and the references were darker and grittier.
