FILM & TV / PUBLISHER PITCH PANELMichael Lloyd (co-owner Curb Records, producer with over 100 Gold & Platinum records), Jerry Davis (Fox Sports music supervisor), Cassie Lord (Executive producer Rescue Records/5 Alarm Music), Ted Lowe (president Choice Tracks music library)Very short intro better for pitchingUp-tempo easier to place, as fast as possibleFor sound library CDs, genre has to fit exactlyHelps to have instrumental hookSports mostly up-tempo, dramatic, instrumentalNon-specific lyrics, if any, themes like winning, dreamsOrchestral good for action, suspense. Don't over-quantize. Use some live strings so it doesn't sound too synthetic.End of year highlights: busy track. Each sport has different musical needsIf song has organic sounds (flute, strings, etc) don't make it clash with drum machine tracks.Relationship songs work for soaps, movie of the weekUsually much easier to place general emotions like soaring, epicRepetitive general phrases like "higher"Michael Lloyd: When you get a rejection what should you do? Do better.Muzak type tracks very placeable. Weather channel, scenes in malls, elevators.Make sure music is interesting but won't distract from dialogPrefer to get link than to get CD

Writing up is cowriting with someone who has had more success than you. Successful songwriters have to come up with ideas all the time and will have used most of theirs up. It's harder to come up with a new idea than to craft a song. If writing up, come in with some ideas.

Doing work on spec means: do the work and spec nothing.

Nomi - INCREDIBLE JOB! I was at a couple of those classes as well, and your notes are much much better than mine. Thank you so much for posting these!

One thing I clearly recall from my own (lost) notes taken during Robin Frederick's class was how "HOT A/C" choruses are almost musical versions of the literary short story.Details, emotions, insight, and then BAM. BIG pay-off at the end. I loved that idea. And Pink's "Who Knew" was a terrific example of it.
