Rocking ChairsWell, you and I are brothersborn here many moons backold man Smith cut a pinecarved all summertimethen set us out front of this shackI thought none could be closerthan those cut from kindred woodbut Mr. Smith and his wifejoined their thoughts and livestill they lived close as two hearts couldas a tree we had rings insidethat said how long we'd been alivetheir rings showed the life they sharedas they held hands in us rocking chairsMrs. Smith read the Good Bookout here ev'ry afternoonwe learned more of the skythan as a lonesome pinestaring up at the stars and moonyou were scared of long winterswhen they'd burn old shelves for heatbut we were always sparedsomehow two cheap pine chairswere branches on their fam'ly treethough they had down pillows on their bedsporchside dreams felt softer for their headswhen dawn's golden boots climbed the porch stairshe'd find them in us rocking chairsone day Mr. Smith was busy in the barnI told you first when she passed in my armswith tears he took his ax to one more pinetreenow her final bed is kin to you and mesometimes without cause I seem to moveyou say you don't know what that provesbut he thinks his love is here somewhereholding hands with him in us rocking chairs(c)2005 Robert George
