Roger Linn strikes again?

Post by Penz2nz » Wed May 26, 2010 7:50 am

Stumbled on to this today and all I can say is:
I hope the "..unfortunate IP squabbling in the multitouch sector." doesn't kill this new interface.
His prototype video is very impressive.

these are some exciting times for interfaces. really calling into question all kinds of notions about what is music, what is performance, etc.

the downside is that you can get pretty good at a current interface/instrument doohickey, only to have it outmoded by the next crazy advances in tech. i've come around to believing it's a better long-term investment to explore and become comfortable with a traditional instrument, like guitar or keyboard, vs. having extreme proficiency on a korg kaoss pad or a novation launchpad.

Still cool to have alternatives for untrained but instinctive musicians; I once saw Erykah Badu open up a can o' whoopass with a KaossPad. (now even the singer can take a solo, heh)

Absolutely, whatever can get more people involved in music making and creative pursuit is good. I find though that as I move from making wacky electronic music with no commercial regard and strive for more versatility across genres, I'm coming back to the piano and guitar training I started as a kid before neglecting in favor of crazy beats.

It's all about what you want to accomplish I suppose. Exceedingly obvious, but true.
