We were strollin’ on the boardwalk
On a moonlit night in May
I was makin’ some suggestions
For a summer getaway
Then she kissed me on the forehead
And she said she’d always care
But she’d been lookin’ at her future
And I wasn’t there

She broke it to me gently
But she still broke my heart
She let me down so easy
And still left me scarred
Though my life is shattered
I’ll pick up the pieces
If time will do its part
O she was calm and friendly

I remember how she told me
No one was to blame
But somehow her soothing words
Only caused more pain
I don’t know when I’ll be able
To open up my heart again
Sometimes a man needs closure
Before he lets another in
