Re: Slate digital tape machine!
There's also the acustica-nebula stuff that is already out, has been for awhile. I have a few of the programs from a couple of the third party developers, like this one, r2r from cdsoundmaster.
http://cdsoundmaster.com/site/cds-softw ... e/r2r.html
I use them all the time, but I stop short of endorsing them because most programs are very subtle and not an "in your face type of effect".
Some presets you wonder if they done anything at all, though the waveforms do change, sometimes difficult to tell because of decreased gain. The ones that tend to be less subtle don't seem to be as flattering overall, however in the right situation they can do magic. Definitely a "your mileage may vary" effect.

Re: Slate digital tape machine!
I've messed around with some of these tape emulations and I've been impressed.
On another YouTube video, I learned that the idea is to use them on every track as well as your master bus. When you think about it, it makes sense. In the analogue 24 track tape days, every track was on tape, not just the final master.
Also, I've been thinking 'bout the channel strip emulations and realizing that tracks used to go through a channel twice. Once on the way in and once on the way out.
I used all of these plug-ins & concepts on this track, I've nearly finished, with Stephen McElligot:

that is a really good point. Years ago I was tracking and mixing to and from tape with an analogue mixer. Coming back to those tapes and transfering them into a DAW (Cubase 6) I thought hey I'm gonna really shape up these old recordings! But somehow the original mixes sound more punchy, more driven and had more depth.
I realised that the MIC PRES/INPUT TRIMS on my old desk was being used to and from tape and these were certainly adding to the "sound". I could not recreate this feel on my DAW. These tape sims are pretty cool but I really think the way forward is with channel strips and desk emulations like the waves NLS plugs. I tried them the other week and I found that they can really help warm things up and give things more weight. I guess thats kinda what you are suggesting. The UAD Trident plugin has a good youtube vid exploring similar possibilities too : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiwZLHeEsXs

I listened to an example on Alan Parsons' Art & Science of Sound Recording where he mixed the same song digitally & analogue (I mean the summing). The analogue mix sounded VASTLY superior to my ears. It had soul/heart!

Great, thanks! I LOVE this subject.jonnyh wrote:The UAD Trident plugin has a good youtube vid exploring similar possibilities too : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiwZLHeEsXs

so many choices!
the upgrade to the VCC full is worth it. Its nice to have those other colors.

so are you actually putting two NLS plugs on every track? one at the top, and one after the other processing?

Re: Slate digital tape machine!
I haven't tried that yet...but I've been toying with the idea especially with virtual instruments (I mean: tracks that originate "in the box").andygabrys wrote:so are you actually putting two NLS plugs on every track? one at the top, and one after the other processing?
At the moment I go in through my Behringer analogue desk which I quite like. Then, I've been doing all my summing "in the box" using the Waves NLS. However, long term, I'm seriously considering doing my summing through the analogue desk again (like the old days).
Believe me, I've got a vested interest (these days) in Digital being superior to Analogue. However, it's simply not the case (to my ears).
Have you seen this experiment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eC6L3_k_48&feature=g-wl

I have been messing with addivtive drums for a little over a year. I could not get the sounds I liked in the box. My interface has 18 outputs. I now do my final mix with all my old outboard gear through my old 800B Soundcraft..... I just thought I was being a old dog...........LOL
