Okay, it's time for shameless self-promotion. If anyone is interested in this kind of thing, I happen to edit and publish a magazine called Virtual Instruments. It's pretty good. www.VirtualInstrumentsMag.com

Even funnier if you picture a man wearing it, perhaps JD would like one. but I'm also gonna subscribe, 'cause I bet you have exactly the kind of info a dumb-ass like myself needs to learn. And like you say, "it's pretty good."

You'd probably look good in those panties, Steve.Have you seen the boxers? "Just show her these" is the caption. And yet for some reason we're not getting rich selling these fine quality products...

Response to fretnoise: Aha! Now we're getting somewhere. Consistent with my current status as Worlds Greenest Sound Neophyte, I wasn't aware of the existence of Backbeat/Spectrasonics. And, I was hoping that my posts might provide some recommendations for me to follow-up, such as that which you just gave to me.My sampling choices at the moment seem really to be twofold: (i) to go with a package, such as EastWest (EWQL) Collossus, which provides samples of many, many instruments or (ii) to seek out samples of individual instruments prepared by a variety of different software companies. I strongly suspect that the latter will do a better job on individual instruments, but the issue of total cost will begin to rear it's (ugly) head as I attempt to cover the spectrum of band and orchestra instrument samples.Ah, well. At least, I have a choice! Thanks for good advice.Alan (backtalkunlimited)

Hey Alan, just thought I might be able to make a helpful comment on the sample library purchasing issue. I just checked Colossus on the web, looks like a killer application/library. What's different between it and Backbeat is something I tried to point out in my original post in this thread. It looks to me like Colossus is a library which includes a sample player which will play samples of individual notes of sampled instruments. Backbeat is a collection of sampled drumbeats played by guys like Greg Bissonette. So while I can create a pretty good sounding drumbeat from a collection of sampled drum sounds....it's not going to sound like Greg Bissonette playing drums...which is amazing. The two libraries really serve different purposes, one (Colossus) gives a great collection of sounds while the other (Backbeat) gives a collection of loops played by great players. I want both...and an HD TV.... and a boat....

Quoting from fretnoise: "I want both...and an HD TV...and a boat...."Precisely my point! So, now: What to do? What to do? I know - maybe I can learn to play drums like Greg Bissonette?Naaaaah.Alan
