Soul-Track "Saving Grace" - Critique, please!

And why?I appreciate every feedback!Thanks,GitarreroThis is nothing special,it's not even representative of it's type which is supposed to be Soul.Soul to me,means from the heart,this is just contrived MOR.The song,the production the playing the recording is all average.From the moment I heard the keyboard acoustic guitar I switched off metaphorically and the one positive thing I can say about the song is that it was short so I didn't have to switch off physically.JOther that that I enjoyed it.

Well gitarro, my comments are based on how you set up my expectations.I agree with Johnny that what we hear in this clip isn't soul. But then I don't think a lot of what is touted as soul today has any commonality with what soul is supposed to be. In my opinion this sounds vaguely like the BeeGees trying to do Marvin Gaye. It is hard to judge a song from a clip, but even in the short bit I found the echo on the lead vocal bothersome. It is too obviously an effect, or artifact and cuts into the singer's ability to communicate anything from the heart (as Johnny pointed out). The beat was fine, danceable. The backing vocals did the job nicely. I can't tell if the lyric is coherent, since it is just a sample. The recording sounds clean. The vocals are where they should be in the mix, and I think the balance is fine. Get a a real bass player and that might help.

OK, I'm not in TOTAL agreement here...It feels very much like you want to please everyone, and that can never happen. My opinion? Harden the sound, commit to a style here, don't be afraid to cross musical boundaries with this one.James
