SoundExchange

Does anyone know anything about SoundExchange? From what I gather they are a PRO for digitally performed music (www.soundexchange.com) - sort of like ASCAP and BMI for webcasts, etc.

no, that's not correct. they are a collecting society for the performances in music, not for the compositions .

so: if you composed a song and/or wrote lyrics, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC are the PROs (performing rights societies) who collect monies paid after your music has been used in public (eg was on tv, radio, concert... etc).

if you just performed on a record, for example play guitar or sung, than sound exchange is the society (that is still in the development as far as I know).

the concept that the musicians who performed on a record but don't composed it, also should be compensated is pretty common in most western countries. however, in the U.S. it's pretty new. I don't know what the actual status of soundexchange legally is, ie from what sources they do / don't collect.

SoundExchange distributes royalty from digital, internet/satellite performances (sound recording). So, let's say you have a song play on an internet radio, your PRO wouldn't collect that royalty -- that's where SoundExchange comes in. (PRO collects royalty for songwriters only.)

It's free to register your song and membership is not required.

SoundExchange pays performance royalties for digital sources that stream music (ie Pandora, Jango, etc.) Instead of reporting to a PRO digital streaming sources are required to report to SoundExchange. You can register with them and they will send you a check for useage of your tracks much in the same way as your PRO. You need to register with them. You can also search to see if you're owed anything before you register.

form their website;

"SoundExchange is a non-profit performance rights organization that collects statutory royalties from satellite radio (such as SIRIUS XM), internet radio, cable TV music channels and similar platforms for streaming sound recordings. The Copyright Royalty Board, which is appointed by The U.S. Library of Congress, has entrusted SoundExchange as the sole entity in the United States to collect and distribute these digital performance royalties on behalf of featured recording artists, master rights owners (like record labels), and independent artists who record and own their masters."
