Spooky Hip Hop

Post by sservida » Wed Aug 02, 2017 8:54 pm

Earlier today I get an email from Taxi saying my track got forwarded and an hour ago the music library contacts me and says they want to use my cue. I joined Taxi about a month ago and I didn't think I would be this successful this quickly. I mainly used this website as a way to keep busy between film scoring jobs and I'm ecstatic that this work is paying off!

You can listen to it here:
https://soundcloud.com/banoyness/devils-lullaby/s-AViZp

Here is the listing:
HIP-HOP STYLE HALLOWEEN INSTRUMENTAL CUES are U-R-G-E-N-T-L-Y needed by a great Music Library with international distribution and lots of success in Film and TV placements. They’re on the hunt for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that are in the general stylistic wheelhouse of these references: “The Way I Am” by Eminem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQvteoFiMlg “Hail Mary” by Tupac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkJA6SYwa94 “Renegade” by Jay Z Ft.Eminem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVoqh9bvguU Please submit well-crafted Hip-Hop Instrumental Cues with an ominous sound and vibe for creepy or eerie scenes. Your Instrumental Cue should have a noticeable Hip-Hop vibe, feel, and style, with banging beats, melodic melodies, and some cool sounding ear candy. Be sure to add and subtract layers of instrumentation as your Cue progresses to add some forward momentum and development. All submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Easy edit points and buttoned endings are strongly encouraged. Please do not copy the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (Great sounding home recordings are fine). This Library offers an EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 split. You’ll get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. They’ll get 50% of the sync fee and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Composition to submit to this pitch. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD. All Submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No Full Critiques. All submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Tuesday, July 25th, 2017. TAXI #U170725HH

Great track, your skills were definitely worthy of a forward. Can you share a little about your process… specifically
1. What did you use for your drum track sound
2. Did you use loops or did you play your parts
3. What software or method did you use for recording

Hi Andy1324,

Thanks for taking an interest, I'll try my best to answer your questions. The software I'm using is Fl studio. All the drums you hear are samples. You can find a lot of them for free online if you just google "hip hop sample packs". Then just pick the ones you like and drag them into your sequencer. Nothing was recorded live, all the instruments are done through MIDI. I figured out the first piano progression first then built some other patterns around that (music box, bells, etc.) and I would simply just add and remove the instruments throughout the song. After that just a bit of basic mixing to finish it off. Hope this helps!
