Spotify drops loudness target

Post by Kolstad » Fri May 26, 2017 8:32 am

https://ask.audio/articles/spotify-drop ... -producers

Could be something to note for many of us campers, as Soundcloud and Bandcamp does not seem representative of current trends in the professional music industry..

I can understand in a continuous radio style listening streaming environment where it would be necessary to place restrictions on loudness, however, I'm not sure Soundcloud is necessarily that type of product, maybe they prefer the hands off approach and prefer not to muck around with a poster's uploads, with "nefarious limiters" and such, and place the onus on the poster. For the listener, yes, you get used to keeping your volume controls on the screen and at the ready, but I am expecting it so it isn't so bad.
Soundcloud hosts a lot of audio examples from sampling instruments, and you want to hear the recordings as they posted, not as "mastered" by Soundcloud.

I think of this more as one piece in a bigger puzzle, where the general trend is to disengage in the loudness wars.

Len, I dont think Soundcloud should be expected to turn down the music, as it is not really a commercial platform, but sometimes I do a/b with tracks from Soundcloud, so for some it might be worth to remember that tracks on Soundcloud doesnt neccesarily represent professional masters.

I find 14 lufs pretty low myself, but then I remember that volume knob while mixing :D
