Stand-up Desk?

Post by jazzstan » Thu May 10, 2012 8:35 am

I'm contemplating getting a stand-up desk for my DAW (and maybe my day gig computer, too). A recent back injury got me reading various articles and it seems that standing for about half the time has a wide range of health benefits (beyond just spine stuff.) A computer-geek buddy has one of the whiz-bang electric adjustable ones and lauds its value. I saw one blog where a chap has a perm stand-up desk (less expensive), with a bar-stool height seat for the sitting spells.

Anyone doing the stand-up routine? What's your experience?

I haven't done the stand up thing. But I have heard that another nice way (and healthy too)to go is the exercise ball instead of a chair. You can get them big enough to be the right height for your desk/workstation.

I used a cheap one we had for a bit while playing the piano and I could see replacing my chair with one. My office chair now is in need of replacing and I am either going for an expensive chair, or the ball route. I am currently leaning toward the ball (pun intended :) One thing, it forces you to move around more and not just sit in the chair. Also, seems easier on the feet than standing all day.

I worked with an engineer once who had a standing desk and no chair alternative. He said it ensured that he didn't spend too much time just staring at the screen. I guess that would keep you productive and healthier. I would think it'd be necessary to have the option sometimes though.

Ever since I started standing up in my studio I've been experiencing much less pain in my neck, shoulders and lower back.

For me it just makes sense as I usually have a bass guitar on unless I'm tracking someone else or mixing tracks, then I find myself still standing anyway.

I highly recommend giving it a try!

But Mazz... it fits Casey just fine... he's a humble composer.

Well, I went and did it! Thanks to craigslist I found a used electric-powered one for $800. The high position is great for when I'm recording electric guitar or bass, where I often prefer to be standing.
