Stems

Post by longrider » Fri Feb 16, 2007 3:29 pm

Howdy all Got a couple of question about stems. I have submit a song to be reviewed and was wandering why, If it gos through why they would want to have the song sent to them in stems ? Do they plan on changing the music or editing it in some way?Do I lose the rights of the song when it gos through and say they want to use the song in a movie? Also, how would you go about sending it to them ? I do have it in stems but how would you send them? As CD with each track being playedAny help would be appreciated. Don't want to look to much like a fool ...LOLThanks Tim

I think if you took a poll of music library deals that very few of them were deals that required stems. I'd say that it's more common if you're writing or submitting music to a production company that produces a show or shows. They actually the ones assembling the pieces of the show (film footage, dialog, effects, music). You don't lose the rights to the song and they don't make a new song out of it - it's the same song and you get the same performance royalties no matter which version of the song they use. Sometimes on television you might notice them using kind of a groove track with just bass and drums. That's probably a bass and drum stem from a full song. Or they might want to use the song without the main lead instruments, just kind of a bed of rhythmic music.Stems are usually sent as WAV files on a data CD or DVD.Help is always available on this forum if you cross that bridge. But again, this isn't something for anyone to worry about. It's an unusual event not a common event... and you've got to get the deal first. Dave
