Well Che,That's kinda' what was told ta' me by my good buddy & grand Wizard, the mazz. He told me "ya' gotta' stop writin' like you're producin' an album". So I stopped. I had been so used to writin' that way for so long, that it took me a while to get used to writin' 30 sec & 60 sec pieces. There's alot you gotta' get done quickly in that amount of time, so that was a bit of an adjustment. But hey, I'm the king of adaptation. It was a challenge I willingly took on, so I'm gettin' used to it. Besides, it's not so bad to write something for a 1 minute or 2 minute piece. You don't have to put a great deal of time & energy into it, like you do for a 3-1/2 or 4-1/2 minute song. So it's got it's pros & cons.I-468

My problem is I keep trying to make them too complicated and too layered. If I keep this up, I'll only produce one tune a year. Wow, lessee, that'd mean in 30 years.......

know what helped me squids? I started writing with reference piano againit forces your arrangements a little further down because of the lack of timbral considerationslike yeah you CAN write a 4 part harmony in reference piano, but generally itll just make the piano sound like its having a seizure.I dunno, it was a BIG help for meedit:rant continuation:just as long as you stick to your notes, and dont add more per peice, then you have to break down your patterns, and when you expand your instruments it lightens the music cause its more spread out, without disrupting the harmony or intentend rant

and now for the non de-railing postI think it mainly falls down to emulation, emulation is just doing something like someone else, the rough idea, not copying everything, you want to get int he same ballpark and still make it your own, if you watch any great performer, they train on a song, do it as written until they have it down, and then personalize it with there own touches and style, I mean technically every single one of us is the exact same if you generalize enough "someone who tries to write the best music they can" thats every single person here, then you have the finer details that set us all apart, and theres a plethora of personalities and views and what not even tho we are all in the same barrel, no ones a clone, I think its more of a base shift in that direction, but no one ever said you cant put your own touches in and own it.

I'd love someone to tell me the differences between "I was inspired by....", "I was influenced by....." and "I'm emulating......." ??

Before there was an "ala", there was an original.
