TECH KNOW!
Hey guys, I posted a thread a while back called 'making a start' and I got some great advice from some obviously lovely chaps, the thing is, I'm at a loss currently for time, I have commitments to a number of people who need support and at night I'm exhausted and I just dont seem to be able to take in much of the information from the reccommended websites, I have (thanks to a recent development, a few thousand pounds to spend, finally money saved for a long time to spend on equipment) at the moment I was considering buying a mac pro, logic 8 and a compatible keyboard as well as a guitar. The latter two I am most confused about, but basically, do you think I am heading in the right direction? Also I need a microphone! it is for recording basically pop songs for voice guitar piano drums (have kit but most likely will want to do them electronically) bass and maybe (not essentially) saxophone. What I really want to is... (and again I want to thank the earlier help I got from the guys and I'm sorry I have to ask again but I hope they understand! Just a bit lost!!)...If you had a few thousand pounds (up to about £3500) I dont know what the translation into dollars is, and a blank room, what equipment would you buy ideally, within the budget, I just want decent sounding songs hehe! Lord knows Iv waited a long time to do this, I just want as many opinions as I can! All the best!Got to say, these forums rock! All the best!Joley xxx

Headphones and a keyboard? If you search thru this forum, there is such a wealth of info. But you need to do it, and learn everything you need to know. For decent sounding songs?... I dont drink and/or smoke. The prior two statements are fabrications and/lies. However for the purposes of this conversation. I don't know where I am going with this.

If you were a governor, you would wind up spending this on something other than a studio.....

Re: TECH KNOW!
I don't think you need a keyboard that makes sounds unless you really like a certain one. For the system you're considering and the power it has, you can easily do all your parts virtual which means you just need a MIDI controller that meets your needs. If you are a piano player, then maybe an 88 key weighted controller. That's at the top and then you can go down from there. I'd recommend some knobs and sliders just because it's nice to be able to do some realtime control. You don't need a ton of them, but a couple of sliders and knobs will be nice when you're doing filter sweeps or string swells.A good condenser mic and preamp and something like an SM57 for micing amps would be just fine. I'd look in to some basic room treatment while you're at it. I'd look at what would make the room good for mixing and that will have the benefit of making it pretty good for recording as well. Most of the companies that make that stuff also will take a rough sketch of your room and recommend kits of treatment to fit any budget. Most people spend everything on gear and forget about the room and then wonder why their stuff sounds like crap when they just spent thousands on all this great stuff! It's not sexy like a cool mic but it can make the difference between you knowing what you're hearing and getting a return on a listing for a "not broadcast quality" mix.Good luck and have fun!!!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!
