The Composer's Approach

Post by kclements » Fri Jul 23, 2010 4:33 am

Hi Gang -

I just finished The Composer's Approach by Mike Novy link and found it very interesting. I think that Mazz suggested it on another topic about what we were reading. It has to do with setting up your orchestral templates to allow for the delay between your ears and the room acoustics...very interesting.

After reading the book, I sat down with my Logic template and started to integrate his methods and I started to wonder if this has changed the way anyone is working with mock orchestration. I only (at the moment) own Kontakt and the Logic Plugs, but I can see this system may also work with LASS, or EWQL Strings and other big libraries, but how about Symphobia and the ilk, where things are already set up.

Anyone else read the book and care to comment if it has changed the way you think about things?

It works best with fairly dry samples. Of course, in Kontakt you can turn off any reverb that has been applied by the developer using Kontakt's reverb. I believe this is the case with symphobia. If the reverb is sampled in, it's going to be more challenging, but there's no rule that says you have to use this method on all of your instruments. Besides, in east west orchestra, you can turn down or even turn off the release samples, which is where the reverb samples are triggered for that library.

I've started using this, it's been a bit of a learning curve but I think the concept is sound (no pun intended)

I also found on the books forum, this plug-in for Logic which really seems to simplify things:

I couldn't get it to work at first, but then the dev found out that you need to also install Sonicbirth which is free. This seems to do the trick and it passed vaildation fine for me in logic 9.

going to do some more testing later. I agree with you mazz, some serious mind wrapping needed for me to get a handle on this, but it does make sense. Still experimenting.
