Re: The gap of doubt, how do YOU get out?!
I always come back to the one point, even though I know a lot of people who play and write, there are a lot more who can't. Music makers are a minority in the population of the world at large. I met a person Friday (a banker) who's second life is playing out at bars doing covers. He can play, but he openly admitted, he can't write at all. ArkJack

BIG thank you to you all. I was having a 'doubtful' day yesterday and didn't make much progress in the way of music but the fact that so many people took the time to reply was enough to perk me up again. I can see you are a very close net community with some great experience, advise, expertise ...above all willingness to share which is I guess one of the best ways to learn and grow. Thanks again and here's to future winning, losing and most importantly - playing the game!Lindsey.

Doubt is merely a cloud obscuring the horizon...You can surely finish that thought...

Use the feeling to your advantage. Write a song about not being able to write a song.I Want To Believe - Carlos Mario Gomez 2007SpeedyGeez Studios 2007I believe I have nothing more.I believe I can't play no more.I believe that the well is gone.I believe I can't write this song.Believe it, empty soul, not much inspires me oh noMelody sounds so wrong. Lyrically not so strong. I've been faking it for so long.Writing fragments of melody that don't belong, do not belong together in one song. I want to believe in something so I can put pen to paper.I want to believe in something so I can write a song. Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh.Help me, someone help me write this song.Won't you help me write this song and push me along.Motivate and inspire me by giving something to believe. All I need is someone to share what you believe in and what you care about. What do you care about, what do you care about?I want to believe.

Self-doubt is a human universal, making iit a really good topic for a song. The next time it hits you, write one about it. You may end up with something that speaks to everyone who hears it.At the risk of being "Master of the Obvious", letting doubt get in the way is a self-fulfilling prophecy. So, the positive choices are to either get some distance from it to recharge the muse, or to pròve it to be wrong by working on something new or revisiting unfinished ideas. The well never runs dry- the pipes just get clogged from time to time... Here's my 90s Angst Rock song about writers block and self-doubt. If there's ever a listing for "seething heavy dark mood pieces", this one is ready My Own Mistakehttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=55443&stream=true

I could wallpaper a room with the 'non-fowards' I've gotten on my songs, but oddly enough, I find this great material for writing songs. Think about all the tunes you can write about struggles and how to overcome all odds....that seems to be such a good topic for songs these days. It propels me to write even more. There have been times when think I should just give up....there have been no deals, one foward, not much to say for my pitching so far. So yeah, self doubt is experienced by everyone. But despite that, I still have this unshakable belief that one day, someone's gonna want my songs. So I continue to write and build my catalog. This helps me stay focused.....I just write constantly. That way, I don't have time to get depressed. Idle hands and all that rot. Yep, go ahead and post your stuff, Linzi....you'll find that some people will love it, others will just like it, and some won't like it at all, but have you ever known everyone to love a certain song? If you get a two thirds majority, then you probably have a lot of keepers with good potential.

I keep writing because I'm afraid that if I quit, I'll become a karaoke junky and an air-guitar addict... God bless terrifying thoughts...

Man,If I quit, I got nothin' left ta' do. It's the only thing I'm halfway decent at. I get too tired tryin' ta' shine for everybody else (work/jobs) and not really being appreciated. Gotta' try and shine for me. Maybe that sounds selfish, but I think you all know what I'm talkin' about.ibanez468
