The Sheperd *NEW* Mix comments please!

Post by geo » Wed Mar 18, 2009 7:15 pm

Hi Guys...Had this one up before... added some synth pads and remixed... anything glaring... or not so in the mix? All comments welcomed...Is it close to Broadcast Quality?Peace, Geohttp://www.taximusic.com/download/97855/....0he%20know_.mp3The Sheperd (Little did he know)Lyrics and music by George Daniels© 2008The Sheperd sat at Fireside, sipping on his beer,Little did he know that the wolves were lurking near,Little did he know that a friend was not a friend,Little did he know but soon he’d understand. What started out as one thing quickly led to another,They took what they wanted but had to push it farther. The cold, hard steel felt good in their hands,And they relished the power over a helpless man.Would you fight for your life, would you beg for mercy?Would you struggle to survive, would you offer all your money?Would you try and make a stand, would you even stand a chance? We all know how these stories end.The Sheperd spent 18 hours lashed to a cross,When they asked Dopey why, all he said was just because. But little did he know he’d never be free to hunt again,Little did he know but soon he’d understand. What started out as one thing quickly led to another,But now the wolves were trapped I think they even blamed their Mothers. The cold, hard fact remains you hit him again and again,Now it’s time to pay the piper, for your blood stained hands. The Shepard died to wash away your sins.SoloWould you fight for your life, would you beg for mercy?Would you struggle to survive, would you offer all your money?Would you try and make a stand, would you even stand a chance? We all know how these stories end.His name was Matthew, Bro everybody misses you,Sorry to say but there's more and more like you,Martyred they're with us no longer, The dreams of the King were s'posed to take us higher But we stalled, the mountain too tall,Caught up in our own shit couldn't answer the call,Worried bout the bling bling and silly things,But little did we know the wolves never stopped stopped hunting. The Sheperd sat at Fireside, sipping on his beer,Little did he know that the wolves were lurking near,Little did he know that a friend was not a friend,Little did he know but soon he’d understand. The Sheperd sat at Fireside, sipping on his beer. The Sheperd sat at Fireside, sipping on his beer. The Sheperd sat at Fireside, sipping on his beer.

Hey there... good tune and mix Only one comment, but it stood out to me pretty clearly. At 1:41 on the line"But now the wolves were trapped I think"On the words in bold, you're singing an A#, but the chord is A, so it doesn't really work. Maybe try changing those notes to A instead of A#. I don't know how elegant it will sound, but it will be harmonically correct Actually, overall I'd lower some of the louder harmonies. From my experience, harmonies sit better low in the mix, so that they are more on the edge of perception and not so obvious. I try to make it so they are more "felt" than heard. Besides that, I'll leave by saying nice work! Good luck -dave

I really like the vocal harmony on "Little did he know" part... Very interesting Chorus... sounds... Wow... love the guitar solo, with a kinda reverse sound... nice...I agree with Dave on the lowering vol of the harmonies... they're very nice but would be nicer softer, more effective on a subconscious level I think...I'm no expert at broadcast quality but it sounds fine to me.. andVery good strong track Geo!-Kel

Thanks Dave.... good ears!! I found that on the back up vocal and fixed with Uno... I'm not the singer... I do the music/songwriting... my theory stopped with Mel Bay Guitar Book #1 and my ears aren't very trained... so I appreciate the catch...I rode the faders on the vocals as well....Thanks Kel.... glad you liked the "little did he know" parts... I added a phone filter harmony there as well... think it works nice... think I got the harmony levels better... the lead guitar sound is "fuzzy synth guitar" in Logic Express think I tweaked it a little .... it's programmed... I strum the rhytmn and acoustic...Cool...Peace, Geo

geo I didn't ever hear the first mix so I don't know if this is better or not. Some thing I really like and some things don't work for me. You have a lot going on that is well thought out and well executed. For the most part the mix is there. I have a hard time hearing the quiet thing going on right at the first and that bothers me. I think you intended that and I see where you are going with it but I don't think a screener will like it. I would EQ that part up higher and try to make it "shiny" behind main synth sound. Still quiet but bright. I don't like the solo. A lot of the song sounds the same to me and the solo needs to break that up. Grab a guitar and cut some tasteful licks in there. You could even use the rhythm guitar sound that you already are using. Other than that the song really doesn't have much in the way of dynamics going on. Again, you have much good work here that makes this interesting. I think a screener will touch on these three items.Best of luck!Keith

Thanks Keith...Really... that intro guitar got turned down by accident and of course by run through 10 you stop noticing.... but you did... I remixed with the acoustic up where it should be....That's cool on the solo... but it's there because I couldn't throw some tasty licks in there..LOL ... though I understand the point you make....I understand the point you make about dynamics too... I might put a break down section in but will live with present arrangement for now... this is not my normal genre... not even sure exactly what genre this is... I was going for a hybrid... kinda like when Massive Attack remixed "Mysterious Ways"...Thanks again...Peace, Geo

Geo, Nice production and arrangement ideas. Strong subject and story. At about 40 thru 60 the lead vocal seemed a bit back in the mix to me. Not a major thing just a little lost in there. Sounds pretty much ready to my ears. Cool tune. Dave

Hey "G"!Like y'alls ideas and stuff! There are some spots where the snare gets lost at times. Don't know if that's fixable or not. I think at times the compression knocks it back a bit, I could be wrong though. I like how different this is though from your other stuff. S'got a different feel to it. Ya' know I'm still workin' on that "broadcast quality" thing myself, but I'd say you're there as far as I can tell, but ya' wanna try and make sure things don't get lost here & there. I know, it's tough dude!ibanez468
