I left Georgia back in June of ‘65
I’m the only kin that Sherman left alive
Rode my mare northwest away from blood and death
Where the Tetons filled my eyes and chilled my breath
Choppin’ Aspen logs and packin’ cracks with mud and clay
Built a house n barn,
Cleared a big field for a farm
Where a whisp’ring stream said that’s the Wyoming way
Well, I pushed myself hard to prepare for Fall
And the first snow lay upon my acres like a shawl
Then one night a ruthless rancher raided my new farm
Shot my faithful mare and burned my house and barn
Warned me not to use that stream or there’d be hell to pay
People in a nearby town,
Said there not much law around
Wayward, wild and woolly was the Wyoming way
Well, I’d learned there’s carpetbaggers ev’rywhere,
So I got supplies and bought another mare
And I tracked that raiding party through the snowy hills
Late one night I came upon a Cheyenne squaw.
Her fam’ly was dead and she’d been beaten raw
She was curled up by a pine tree shiv’ring with the chills
And at first she used a bone knife to keep me at bay
Ever since white men had come,
It was either fight or run
Rob and kill and rape was the Wyoming way
I gave her fish and wrapped her in an old deer hide
Motioned with my hands, drew pictures in the sand
And offered her a ride
She declined my offer and she slipped off in the trees
Me, I caught the smell of wood smoke on the breeze
My blade dripped scarlet when I battled for the Grey
It was now my aim,
To make known my name
And make vengeance the Wyoming way
O I came upon their camp prepared to do my worst
My soldier’s honor let them draw their weapons first
Five men fell before me and the snow turned red
Then I felt another put his flintlock to my head
Well, my spirit couldn’t spare the time to pray
Then a stony knife,
Stole that scoundrel’s life
And reminded him of the Wyoming way
Soon the scent of foul decay was far above the pines
And the denizens of death would fold their wings and dine
The path behind mankind is paved with blood and bone
We can’t change that path but we can pave our own
So she helped rebuild the farm with love and logs and clay
And as far as it depends,
On our family and friends
Peace will always be the Wyoming way
Peace will always be the Wyoming way
The Wyoming way…
