Three More Things I'd Like to Know About the Rally

Post by jkoob » Sun Sep 14, 2008 3:39 pm

Hello. I hope I am doing this correctly and I appreciate your patience.Tom, my collaborator, and I will be attending the rally for the first time.I read some of the threads and they brought up some issues that lead to the following questions:1. As for the one song disks that go into the bins for random selection, how many disks do you bring with one song? Is it best to bring one disk with your "best" (at least what you think is your "best") song, or a different song on each disk? We are one genre--country western (technically, this is probably already 3 questions, but hopefully no one will notice .2. As I understand it, you should also bring disks to "hand-out"? How many songs do you put on those disks?3. If you arrive early you may be able to choose a mentor for a 15 minute session. So how do you "choose" a mentor?I would appreciate any assistance you can give us. If I receive 1 response, I will be thankful ; if I receive 2 responses, I will be beside myself ; if I receive 3 responses, I will be thrilled ; if I receive 4 responses ... well, let's not get ridiculous. By the way ... Speaking of ridiculous, I will be wearing that ridiculous red shirt that you see on my avatar. Please say "hi" to me at the rally (I do not think that anyone else will be wearing that shirt). With me, at least 2 things are guaranteed: 1. I will always speak well of you, and 2. I will always speak well of TAXI. Take Care,Jeff

how many disks do you bring with one song?2. As I understand it, you should also bring disks to "hand-out"? How many songs do you put on those disks? You can have more songs than one on a disc and notate which song is to be played in panels. Otherwise figure you will need a few discs for listening panels , one for your mentor appointment, and a couple more for potential professional contacts you may make. 6-8 discs should cover all of these needs. Then, if you want to hand out discs to other taxi members, bring those. Its easy to go through a ton of discs, depending on your "criteria" for handing them out. So how do you "choose" a mentor? You will get the schedule of panels and breakout classes, as well as great descriptions of the mentor's and panelists backgrounds, if Taxi gives us this material as they have in the last 2 years. You'll be able to see what mentor's backgrounds are, and that will make it easy to choose your mentor. Also, other taxi members in your genre are usually really helpful!I will be wearing that ridiculous red shirt that you see on my avatar.Cool! If you have any, stick a DOT (those dots that are used on office files, etc ) on your taxi credentials and that way everyone else on the message board know your a member too (that's why we talk about being "Dots" all the time). HTH!

Quote:I hope I am doing this correctly and I appreciate your patience.yes you are and you're welcome Quote:Tom, my collaborator, and I will be attending the rally for the first time. You will find it quite an experience. Don't be shy, introduce yourself to the other Dots Quote:As for the one song disks that go into the bins for random selection, how many disks do you bring with one song? Is it best to bring one disk with your "best" (at least what you think is your "best") song, or a different song on each disk? We are one genre--country western (technically, this is probably already 3 questions, but hopefully no one will notice .Personally I figure you want one CD with 3 to 6 songs on it, and put your best uptempo songs first... just as you would for a publisher or A&R pitch. There are 4 or 5 panels, and you can make a note on the CD what song you want played should you be chosen. You might want to bring an additional half a dozen 'pitch CDs' in case you get the chance to pass them out. You will want to play something for your mentor - that could be a completed song or a scratch song you want feedback on, whatever you choose. Quote:2. As I understand it, you should also bring disks to "hand-out"? How many songs do you put on those disks?Up to you if you want to bring CDs to pass out to other Taxi members. Many do. I'd bring 20 or 30 or so. Think of it as an 'album' you are sharing with friends. As to number of songs - honestly, I don't have time usually to listen to a lot of songs from different people, so I'd prefer a short CD, but many people put 12 to 15 cuts on it. Up to you. Make sure you label it with your website & email!Quote:3. If you arrive early you may be able to choose a mentor for a 15 minute session. So how do you "choose" a mentor?that's discussed here:http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... hread=9009& http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... ad=9215and - don't forget to bring a couple Dots to ID yourself to other Dots http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... ad=9247and... don't forget there's an opp to play at open mic, and there are many jams in many rooms and hallways... see you there!

Anne!I may be smiling now, but not long ago I was wondering, "What if no one answers me? "Seeing "one reply" may not be much to some, but never actually being a member of any type of forum ... I wasn't sure what to expect. I will always be in your debt, as you were the first person to talk to me.Thank-you for your information and ... thank-you.Jeff

Hi Hummingbird!Thank you so much for your information. For my question number 3, I suspect that you are giving me links to threads where my questions will be answered. How did you do that? Do you cut and paste the thread into your message? Also, since we are talking (thank-you by the way), how do you get that big hummingbird at the bottom of your message? Or is that a secret? I have 2 cats and 2 dogs who I know would love some web recognition.Thank-you!Jeff

Don't forget to sign up for the Mentor Lunches as well. Frankly, I found them more valuable than the 15 minute mentor meeting, which I also signed up for and heartily recommend. I even got to have part of my lunch listening to Buzz Bugsby, former bass player with Frank Zappa!I brought 40 CD's and handed out about 30 of them. I had no problem giving away the other ten to friends and relatives when I got home. You can put a little line on your CD label that says "Please listen to track #...."so you don't have to custom burn separate CD'a for the panels. I really wish I could afford to go this year. Have fun!!!!Mewman

Wow! Four different members responded to me. That is in my "that will never happen category."Mewman, thank you for your response. I am sorry you won't be there. Maybe next year, but until then, always feel free to talk to me on the forum. As for Hazineju ... I must say that I read your message about my shirt and you had me laughing out loud.I wear that shirt so that people will recognize me and have something to help them remember me. Oh, not that I would not be remembered by my personality alone! Well ... I guess I need the shirt.Say "hi" to me at the rally.Take care,Jeff
