Tonight - 3 Way Taxi Collab

Post by Casey H » Thu May 15, 2025 8:55 am

MIX UPDATED SINCE INITIAL POST

Hi all
This is the first mix of a female pop song I did with Heidi Glynn-Finnegan and Paul Otten. I met Heidi at the rally 2 years ago and, of course, I've worked with Paul for years. Looking for feedback on the mix. The vocal is by WFH vocalist Elizabeth Red.

Thanks!

Link not working ..................... J/K!! :P

Hi Casey,
here's my thoughts, but others will hear it differently so please take what makes sense to you and forget the rest.

- The first thing I notice is that there's something beneath the snare hits that sounds out of sync with them, so it sounds like flammed hit. Once I latched on to it I couldn't let go of it. I'm sure its an artistic choice but I think it might be worth giving that some attention to make the snare sound 'clean' and clear.

- I'm not sure about the drum sound in V2. It sounds a bit too heavily processed to my tastes (particularly the heavy short reverb) but its artistic choice again. Personally, I prefer the drum sound in the later breakdown section.

- I agree that it would help to balance the volume of the vocal sections To my aging ears its a little quiet in V1 and V2 but perhaps a little loud in the pre-chorus 1 (where its filtered and gets a bit nasal) and chorus 1 (particularly when the 'oh oh oh tonight' comes in at the end). V2 seems ok, pre-chorus 2 is a bit hot again, as is chorus 2. The bridge seems about right, although perhaps evening up some of the words within that section would help. The final choruses are a bit hot again.

In general though, I really like the song and the production style.

I hope there's something there that helps. Good luck to you all with it :) .
Like it is, and 100% HI

I don't mind the snare but I'm always the guy who goes too far with edgy sounds and dirt. I think the vocal is hot in every part but the verses. You have to compensate for the increased perceived loudness that comes when using more effects. In the bridge it's the filtered/saturated tone that makes it poke out and in the chorus it's the super wide doubling and the added reverb. Overall the mix is a little dry for my taste but that's just my personal preference. Otherwise it sounds like 90% there but it's the last 10% that's always the hardest

Updated the mix to even out the verses and choruses. Still working on the bridge so that level will be off. How are the verse/chorus levels now?

Thanks!

Cool song, Cassey! A bit of work on the drum sound and some vocal volume automation would take it even further.
Cheers!
