I think it's pretty good Tom.

I could use more punch in the kick sample , I think I can hear them doubling the 808 bass part but in the ref track they hit a lot harder so it's probably a case of finding a punchy kick and layering it.

The claps could be a bit sharper for me as well, some sort of high shelving boost. Then the other thing is to just give it more variation now as currently no matter where I skip forward or back to it often sounds like I'm in the same spot.

and I can also see it in the waveform.
Aw, I feel like a bit of irony now... do we expect our audience to WATCH our music and say: "Wow, that's a really cool waveform!?!"

Tom - I meant for you to layer the 808 with another kick drum..that's what I hear in the ref track. something that sits above the sub to give it some thwack

At the moment I have one kick doing the attack and a subbass (with no real punch) that comes in after that (is ducked against it). If you call this combo "808", then - am I correct? - you mean I should now put another kick on top of it? I can play around with it. But it feels pretty punchy to me now that I have ramped up the existing kick quite a bit.

Here is the waveform of the isolated kick+subbass combo. You can see the punch of the kick with the very short transient, then the long subbass wave comes in.

Not interested in looking at waveforms...use your ears...The punch of the kick is very obvious in the Drake track - in yours it's not really coming across

I have trouble hearing that. But I wonder if it is that I should duck the rest against the transient of the "808". I don't do that yet.

Tom
No...you are overthinking it. The punch doesn't come from the 808 ..it comes from a punchy kick sample that you layer on top

Okay, last try before I send you the track (thanks for the offer!):

I have changed the kick sample and some parameters in the gate.

Seriously?? :o It sounds really good on everything I have, and stronger than Drake’s, who of course has more going on.

Alright, if you pm me with an email address, I’ll send you a WeTransfer with the sub bass and the rest.

Tom
