Hey, I've known about Mark since shortly after high school, and I appreciate the sentiment, but that rant is at least five years out of date. (not saying he's wrong) What's really exciting about the current situation is that somebody gets to build the new music business paradigm, we just don't know who it is, yet. :D

It might be a bit out of date sounding, but what's really interesting about Mark Isham, to me, is that he's not just talking about it like everyone else. He's really doing it.

I've been following him and his site for a few months now. It took me a while to understand what he was up to. Why was this successful composer actually spending all this time interacting with people and giving away music and engaging fans in remixes, etc?? This isn't some indy artist trying to make it in todays world without a record contract. This guy has already made it.

So I couldn't figure out what this angle was. So I keep going back to the site and downloading the free tracks and getting involved in the "contests" just to see what was up. Then last night he sent out an email that linked to the page I posted.

And there it is. This isn't a rant. He's really doing this! And its working. I think its something that a lot of us composers here should take a good hard look at. There's something to learn here watching what he's doing and how he's doing it.

Mark's music sure sounds awesome! As I read it, he's basically saying that he'd like to involve listeners more so they become more committed to the music they choose to listen to. A side effect could be that they would do less piracy, and buy more good music.

Not that far from what many others are saying. Mark's label also walk the talk, so that's great! We could use more people in music, like that!

Considering that, I think Michael and Taxi is a similar example working somewhat in the same vain, trying to connect musicians with music supervisors and other industry people. When we all get more involved, we become more committed, and start to care more, both about music and about each other.

I think that's a great general principle to be promoted.
