Yeah, MJ didn't so much have a problem voice, it's more that he would beatbox/add vocal percussion in the middle of a melodic vocal line; condenser mics would have a hard time handling the plosives. People think of Michael as a singer/dancer, but he was really a drummer, too.
I'm pretty sure Diana Krall used it for a different reason; an RE20 can add weight and body to a thin female vocal.
