Two Sides of the Same FenceI’d heard someone bought up, ol’ man Jasper’s landOver that fence I saw, a red VW vanIt had daisy stickers, and peace symbols on the sideRight then I knew he was left, of what I thought was rightBut he saw me and walked over, so we stood there and jawedI learned about human nature, as we talked of life and GodCos my place had eastern windowshe liked solar panels on his roofhe had somethin’ in his shed, he was hidin’ from the Fedsmy shed had 90 proofand alotta what he saidmade my kinda senseI found more united us than what divided usWe were two sides of the same fenceI couldn’t believe a redneck, from Jackson, MissisippiHad so much in common, with some west coast hippyWe both felt our fathers near, though they both were goneAnd “Make You Feel My Love”, was both our wedding songsWe still play it for our wives, slow dancin’ by the hearthThey just like Dylan’s version, while we prefer Garth’sAnd I raise beef and he raised grainBut we both were hard workersThough I told him I, was too chicken to tryOne of his turkey burgersBut I could tell right thereWe’d grow to be good friendsI found more united us, than what divided usWe were two sides of the same fenceWe talked until the sun began to sink, then I shook his hand and said with a wink“you’re alright but you’re wrong about one thing, cos good Buddy, that guy can’t sing”He laughed said “I’ve got a pony tailBut you’ve got a crew cutI guess you’ve seen, I’ve got bell bottom jeansand your Levi’s are bootcutbut alotta what you saymakes my kinda senseand more has united us than what divided uscos we’re two sides of the same fence”©2007 Robert George
