Uh wow, I just won an orchestra competition!

Post by fusilierb » Tue Aug 10, 2010 12:42 pm

Hi friends,
I just got a phone call letting me know that my piece "Fitfull Dreams" was selected to be performed and recorded by a real orchestra. Wow!!

I wrote this piece specifically for this competition during an incredibly chaotic time in my life where I was actually preparing for a major move, a huge career change and dealing with crazy library deadlines. Oh yeah, and I was working three "day" jobs. Yikes.

I actually thought I hadn't won as they said they were going to announce the winners last week. Just as I had gotten over the disappointment, I got the phone call out of the blue. I guess they were just running a bit behind.

Here are the details of the competition and performance:

And here is my "official" blog post about it all.

That's awesome, Bryan!! Very cool!! It just goes to show that the music comes through even in the toughest of times! You have realized the dream of many a composer (myself included!) of having your music played by an orchestra. I'm very happy for you!! And a little green...............

Congrats!

I'm very excited! I'll definitely post up the recording when I get it. Unless they butcher it. :)

I got really lucky on this one Mazz. The chances of a local composers group getting something like this together and organizing the performance and recording is pretty rare and they limited the pool of competition by keeping it all Louisiana based, which I'm sure helped a lot. They are doing a rehearsal the night before and then the performance, so I get a bit of time for prep with the orchestra and conductor. I can't wait!

I forced myself not to look at or listen to this thing after I submitted it. I re-listened tonight and want to do lot's of rewriting. I don't think they want me to do that, but I'm definitely gonna punch it up a bit here and there before the conductor score and parts are due, which is a few weeks away.

Thanks!!
B

I just got the email detailing the score/part requirements and rehearsal info. It looks like I'm one of seven composers chosen to make up the concert. We each get 20 minutes of rehearsal time the night before the concert. Sweet.
