Great sounds can be got from a POD. I know for a fact that Pete Anderson who is Dwight Yoakums guitarist and producer is using the POD for most of his tracks in the studio. I play big live shows a few times a week with a guitar player who's using a POD straight into the board and it sounds great. My personal favorite modelling system is Amplitube software but it really starts with your ears, the band David and David recorded all their guitars by plugging into a Fostex 4 track for it's sound and then straight into the board, crazy. Go for it.
